The previous owners of my car used some touch up paint all over the hood, unfortunately it is not even close to the right color, my car is medium garnet red, they used some gold color. I thought about acetone but am affraid to use that on my car, I think it would fade the paint or strip off the clearcoat or something.

... I would simply sand and spray over it :)

I would be too afraid to use sandpaper on my car

... well, once you remove the 'old' paint you will have to apply something and in order for it to adhere properly, you'll have to sand it :)

I mean, is there a chemical or something that will remove the touch up paint without touching the cars original paint? I'm not about to strip it down to bare metal

... AFAIK, not without removing the original paint as well ... why was the 'touch-up paint' applied in the first place?

Acetone shoudln't hurt it at all. If you're afraid, just try rubbing it on a spot under your trunk lid to test it. It may take off your touch up paint but it also may not. If it doesn't, the only way is to sand. (Wetsand & either retouch or spray)

... after reading JoeyK's other posts, I would believe what he has to say over my comments :)

Yup, you'll have that! I used to use acetone to clean my spray guns. it's a good mid strength cleaning chemical.

Cool ... that is why I don't do 'body work' or 'paint' I guess ... I figured the acetone would take BOTH layers of paint off  ... anyway, glad it worked!!
