Does any one know any where I could buy a cat back or a nice deep sounding exhaust that is made for a 97 GA GT 3.1 L V-6 coupe? I have to replace the exhaust on my new GA soon and I want something thats got a deep low sound to it. Thanks

There are no specific cat-back setups for the pre-1999 Grand Am, if you need to replace the pipes they will have to be custom-bent. The muffler is personal preference, although the crossflow Flowmaster 80-series is very popular for good reason.

Dual 40 or 50-series is a better fit for the pre-99 chassis.

The 3.1 is a very good sounding engine, no matter what you do to it, it will sound very deep. go to a exhaust shop and have them put on a exhaust made by them and get some mufflers (unless you dont want, however they are illegal if you dont have) and if you do, get some QUAD TIPS for god sake they look amazing on GA's

rockauto.com sells the stock cat-back piping...
Order:
WALKER Part #53423 - Axle connector pipe
WALKER Part #56098 - Resonator pipe
WALKER Part #31369 - After-cat gasket
WALKER Part #31310 - y-pipe gasket
Then just slap whatever muffs on it that you want...
I just ordered the pipes, and some cheapy ebay ricer muffs. Will be here Tuesday... I'll put up some pics and maybe sound clips up when I get it done. I have the 2.4 so its gonna be a different tone. Chrome cans are okay because it's a 4cyl.... haha.

Yes, but it will also be the stock pipe diameter, which defeats the purpose of making a performance exhaust system. The pre-99 has 2.0" piping, which isn't very performance oriented.
No, chrome cans are not ok on a 4 cyl, in fact they will sound even worse because it takes careful selection of mufflers to make that 2.4 sound decent.

Matt, I'm not trying to get on anyone's bad side here. I really don't like the whole ricer thing either. These Muffs aren't really cans. I guess I kinda mis-spoke. They are stainless oval mufflers, and are of pretty good quality too. I couldn't pass up the deal, as my old exhaust has rusted off and I'm on a college budget.
I bought the "Volt" mufflers. I got the pair to my door for $33. They retail for $54 + Shipping each. They aren't very well known, but from the sound clips i've heard, I love the sound.
I bought the stock piping because I'm not doing any major mods to my car anytime soon. I simply needed something to get the exhaust out from under my car, and I think this package will do that quite well. You couldn't built a cheaper setup without using flex-pipe or custom bending all the pipes, which I dont' have the tools or time for.
Here is a link to an MX6 with the volt muffler on it. I know it's not nearly the same thing, but it'll give people an idea until I can get a sound clip up to clear my name here on the forum.

And here are some pictures of the exhaust. It just came today and I'll have it on in the next couple days.

I understand where you're coming from, but most people asking questions about building a modified exhaust system are looking to upgrade in the process. Just addressing that aspect for the original poster.

Right I see where your coming from too. I just thought that from the sounds of the initial post that he wasn't neccesarily concerned with huge pipes and awesome flow, but more the sound.

Which is why I threw in what I had done. I wanted the same thing as this guy, a nice sounding exhaust for a pre-99 GAGT.
Thanks for understanding,
Adam

Just wanted to mention on a96-98, getting quad tips that will fit in the cutouts in the rear bumper is pretty damn difficult....
