I am also thinking about upgrading my alternator. I've looked around for an answer, and have heard a lot of good things about this place.

http://www.excessiveamperage.com/

I E-mailed him to get a quote for a 200 amp alternator for my 2001 Grand Am GT (3.4L V6), and he said it would be $330 shipped. He also has sales around Christmas time if you want to wait. ($300 shipped) If I do decide to get a High Output Alternator, I will purchase from this site. Another site wanted $500+ for a 200 amp.

I have an excessive amperage 200amp alt. It is a direct bolt on with no problems.
anything more than the 200amp model and you will have to do some custom instillation work.

You wont be disappointed, get one today!

How much power is your system running? Are your headlights dimming?

I get 15.1 - 15.6 at idle and I have 210 amps fused power on my power block.

I don't have any dimming problems.

dbelectrical is selling a few 200 amp ones on ebay right now $211 shipped! i got one from them early his year and it's been incredible so far. i'm running 1000Wrms and i have a 2farad cap plus i did the big 3 upgrade with 4gauge cable, and the dimming i had before is gone now, even with AC or heater running & whatever else i turn on.

There are two types of high output alternators, I think its externally and internally regulated or something. One of them the alternator is actually turned off until you reach a certain RPM, which is why some aftermarket alternators only show 12 volts at idle. Cheap ebay alternators are usually the ones that are off during idle, my 4 door came with one and it sits at 12volts at idle.

the one i got off ebay from dbelectrical is steady at 14.7 volts at idle and the same when i go up to around 1500rpm's. this is a real good deal for people lookin to upgrade. these guys do have a website, but i didnt see a HO alternator for the 99+ grand am on there, maybe i'm just blind & overlooked it idk lol... but they do have em on ebay.

i have a ohio generator alt, and it blows at idle. i get 12 volts, and sometimes less with the a/c on, or the rear defroster, or even my headlights and brakelights sometimes. i paid like $500 for it, and when i idle it does nothing but piss me off. we've tried smaller pullies and all that crap nothing works. if i'm not hitting 800 rpms or more, i'm not getting much voltage. i'm really thinking about getting from this excessive amperage place, i just dont have the money right now.

actually i wanted to clarify a few things:
1) on some aftermarket alts the voltage drops at idle, thats a sign of a cheaply made alternator. a good alternator will retain at least 13.5 volts at idle with accessories turned on, and shouldnt go over 14.5 volts.

2) almost any good auto electrical shop can build a high output alternator for you, install it, and test it out to make sure and show you that the voltage stays high.

3) i got mine (i think it was 150 amps) for $150 from a local shop. they installed it, then had me turn on my head lights, A/C and turn my system all the way up and the voltage stayed at or above 13.5. they gave me a 3 year warranty, but i never had a problem with it leading til when i sold the car 5 years later.

These guys are just as good as nate and a bit cheaper about $1 per amp

DB-starter-alternator.com

Output at idle = 105 amps.
Maximum output of 200+ amps is achieved at 1200 engine rpm.

I would not buy this. JMO

Just wondering why??? I have tested it right along side my EA alt and it performs just as well???

Why wouldnt you buy it? 105 at idle is decent, and to max out at 1200 rpms isnt bad at all. Especially if your going into sound comps, cuz atleast the ones ive been to your allowed to rev up to 2000 rpms.

these are the people that i bought mine from, i got my 200A from an ebay auction of theirs earlier this year & so far so good, it stays the same voltage from idling at 700rpm all the way on up. i've tested it at 14.7v before, on other days it'll be around 14.1v or anywhere in between. honestly i couldn't tell u if this is a big problem cuz i'm not a expert electrician and i haven't done any in-depth tests cuz frankly i dont care to lol. but here's what info i have for u...i'm running a cadence A7+HC plus an older class A amp and when i'm driving i've turned on the heater, had my lights on & whatever else that uses up electricity, lately i checked what would happen with the rear defroster on too, and i can pound my subs all day and nothing dims at all. which is exactly what i hoped for. i did install a 2 farad cap as well as the big 3 upgrade with 4AWG (which is what db electrical states to do) & it's been nothing but great for using so much current.

I would not buy it because 105 amps at idle is just not enough. thats only about 30 or so over stock?
how many amps is you load? 150-200? Do you plan to sit in the car and press the gas peddle to get up to 1200rpm?
I would not want to do it that way, but to each their own. my application is a little different. I have well over 200 amp load. I like to have as much power as possible at idle. If my car is pulling 1200 rpm......it better be moving! :)

Well I agree, I personally would want more amperage too. But I wouldn't say don't by that alternator, because well it does to 30 amps over stock. People just need to buy for their needs.

that's a good point. but the next question would be, what all accessories are going to be running at once? headlights/brights? plus hvac fan on full blast? plus interior lights? plus rear defroster? plus layin on the horn? plus shoving the cig lighter in? plus movin the power seat back & forth? plus having the radio up full blast? all at the same time, while the car is at a dead stop? basically, if all the amperage used is added up, will it exceed the amperage output at idle of whatever alternator chosen? honestly, i dont know how much amperage each accessory uses, i just dont think many people have all their accessories in use full blast all at once. but yeah, if u have multiple amps to run while at idle then the bigger the better...
