a coolant flush would be a good idea.

Id also change the heater core hoses. Its pretty damn easy to get back when its all pulled apart and if you got a high mileage car its preventive maintence.

Use fal-pro kit, but if you can avoid dexcool... I've had all kinds of GMs all my life, and water pump problems and seal/gasket problems go away after dexcool has been totally flushed and replaced with standard green coolant.
It may be just my luck, but I avoid dexcool like the plegue now because of all the problems it has caused me...
Besides, Lower intake manifold gasket was a regular maintenance (insert sarcasm here) until the metal fal-pro gaskets came into play. I don't know if fal-pro is the only one making them now, but make sure its a metal gasket with silicone seal that goes on your car.

Oil, coolant flush, spark plugs, thermostat, and coolant hoses are all very accessible.

LOL, yes it is... yes it is...
But smile, my friend, because us is many, them is little.
There is NO car on earth that you can find more parts for than any GM 5.7L (350)/5.0L (305)/4300/3800/3400/3100/2.4/2.3/2.2 motor, and most cars are considered imbred, meaning, a lot of parts from similar GM cars will fit...
(ie. Waterpumps, any GM 3100, any GM 3400 etc, Plugs, oil filters...)
Most things are used by more than one kind of GM vehicle, so parts get stocked frequently at any store.
So, who is laughing now? A dude with a BMW 740 that can't get a MAP sensor for his car? Has to order it and wait a week?
A dude with a Vette that has to wait 2 weeks for a door lock motor?
BAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! I laugh at them all!!!
Oil, coolant flush, spark plugs, thermostat, and coolant hoses are all very accessible.

question for you guys... i just got my car back recently from the shop... they fixed the lower intake manifold leak...and we also put a 180* thermostat... ive noticed the car is running alot cooler, and takes a lot longer for it to get hot... which is very nice for a change... but still... if im driving around for a while, and in some traffic.. it will still randomly get really hot... then suddenly come back down again after 10 min.... what could be the problem?

First off, $500 is a really good price, here in the N.East expect to pay around $800.
Second, why did they put in a cooler stat?
Third, a fluctuation in temp could be A) a defective stat B) Air pocket in the system C) circulation problem or D) a bad head gasket
Technician A says all of the above. Technician B is a total moron and takes another hit off the pipe. :P

$500 is a good deal... i guess its because there is a auto shop every 2 min to your left or right... so they really have to compete (oh they also gave me a free loaner car for a week haha)
i put in a cooler stat because i had one on my 96, and i really liked it, it always kept the car alot cooler, and took it a longer time to warm up... it was nice for a change to not see the car always running super hot
im gonna have the coolant flushed again because they used dexcool in it... and i still saw a little bit of gunk and crap in the reservoir ...hopefully that will fix it...
