new water pump installed, chain off, tensioner still off( how do you pre-load these??) I bought a new one of these as well.
new shoe assy. on the way!this is still off too!
all marks are lined up,made my own holders, before i removed (broke off) the shoe, couldn't get the chain on the sprockets.
the car only has 46,000 miles , the chain is in great shape so I didn't buy a new one of these.
the manuals are all useless for the pre-load thing, I figured I would ask someone with experience .

The 97 2.4 timng chain adjuster is hydraulic .It has a hole in the back that lines up with an oil pressure hole in the block .When the engine builds oil pressure it runs the piston out and makes contact with the back of the shoe. You just push the piston back down untill it bottoms in the housing and bolt it on with the two bolts that holds it in place .You have the slack of the chain on the shoe side and when you crank the engine it will set itself.I unplug the coil pack and spin the engine untill it sets to make sure its right .

You put the chain on first, start on the crank gear next the water pump then the intake cam gear then you can go on the exhaust gear .Then put in your slides including the top one.You will put your shoe in next and last your adjuster.Keep the chain slack on the shoe when you install the adjuster.Tighten the two bolts .I take a large screw driver and hold pressure on the shoe up aganist the chain,(don,t have the screw driver obstrucking the adjuster ) have someone turn the motor untill the piston tightens up the chain.Do this with the coil pack unplugged at the back of the motor so it will not start. Then recheck your timing marks.
