Does anyone know if stock headunits for the monsoon on grandprixs work on our grand ams? Or if the new 06 headunits in the grand prix work in for say a 03 grand am? I don't mind stock units but I want something more advanced. I think the newer years though have a "Lan" system in the grand prixs. I don't know if the 03 grand ams had that yet. Otherwise I might just get a new headunit. I've tried this "aftermarket" setup with a chime module but I think it had a different ohm resistance because it seemed like I lost a lot of kick to the sound or I had to turn it up a lot just to have it at a decent loudness. I need some help with this. This somewhat upsets me. Do any aftermarket units have RDS?

i cant help you with stock headunits because I hate them. Alot of aftermarket head units have rds. My pioneer does, even my older pioneer that I bought in 99 had rds. Of course both of these were (are) high end head units. I dont know if lower end head units have rds. I dont listen to fm radio and there is only one station here that uses rds so it's pointless for me anyway.

the newer GP stock units and the G6 units wont fit. they are diesigned to fit flush in the dash rather than recessed like in the GA. your 03 will use an 02-05 head unit from GA only i think. the previous ones as well as the older GP ones were 1.5 DIN, yours is 1.75 DIN.

heres the 04+ grand prix stereo:

2003 GA has a 2 DIN set-up, so any pre-2001 GA radios won't work. You "lost" bass because the stock radio is set up to run the stock speakers at an optimum level, you would have to replace your speakers to get the best sound, and even then you have cleaner sound, which seems like you lose bass. If you really want bass, you can add a sub or amp your cabin speakers.

Would the Impala type radio work? I think they have one like that for the newer grand prix that uses the monsoon. It would just be matter of connectors right? Would it still turn on my Monsoon amp?

About the aftermarket unit... I sort of didn't understand what sudden-impulse meant. I still had some bass but when they put the aftermarket unit in along with that chime modulator it seemed like I lost a volume level. I had to turn it up more than normal, unless it was the headnunit itself and there was features I didn't know about. To be honest I'm happy enough with the speakers I just don't want to deal with the bs stock headunit with the LEDs or lights and crap burning out.

Thanks for your help so far.

Nope. Impala ones would not work. Impalas didn't use monsoon either, so it would not use the monsoon amp.

Also, the mounting for the impala radios is much different... especially with the new ones.

When it comes to audio solutions for the Monsoon equipped vehicles, generally bypassing the amp is the easiest option, and by far yields better results.

Any pontiac radio around 02-05 should work. The sunfire, montana, and bonneville.
