View Full Version : Your first time in a GA?

Im getting people's ideas to their first exposure to the GA.
Ill start off with mine. I didn't really pay attention to GA's until my uncle bought a Red SE1 with a 2.4 and sunroof. That was a cool car ,especially to a 14 year old .
Fast forward to college. Freshman year one of my roomates drove another SE1 , this one a silver 4 door with , again , suroof and 2.4 motor. My did we do stupid things in that car, like cut class and 'drift' on campus roads.
Then I test drive a , surprise, GA SE1 with 2.4 ( no sunroof this time) and , even after coming from a V6 import, I was impressed with this car's pickup , considering it had two less cylinders than what im used to.
And im still lovin' it. How about you?

well, mines got 30 more hp than my s-10 did, but i really miss rear wheel drive and stick, especially in the snow, sure the ponty accelerates better, but the s-10 was far easier to drift, no hand brake or reverse-donut crap.
the ponty's only my second vehicle and as cars go, i do like it a lot, i'm just a truck person stuck a little too close to the ground now.

My first experience with one sucked. The first one I really rode in a lot is my best friend's 1994 Grand Am SE. It's the biggest POS ever, with deer collision damage, broken interior pieces, water leaks abound, rotted exhaust, and a persistent random list of other things that go wrong. But it still runs, despite it's harsh treatment.
Then my neighbor got an '00 SE1 with the 2.4 and 120k-ish miles, and I was way jealous because I was still stuck with my old Beretta. ;)
Turns out that same neighbor had went to look at my current car but decided against buying it because her parents said it was too fast for her. So they told me to go look at it, and I did. The rest is history.

Hmm, it was definitely during high school sometime.. 95-96 or so. I don't remember which was the first experience though...
89-91 SE, white, automatic - Neighbor kid's mom, used to carpool with them, so rode in it a few times. I still remember the awkwardly mounted CB radio just to the right of the center console. (It was later replaced by a dark green 94-95 GT IIRC) I can't remember if it was a coupe or sedan, but I do recall a girl in the band with me who used to get dropped off in the same model, but sedan including the white 16" wheels, which I remember standing out along with the "dual-duals" tips.
89-91 LE, coupe, dark blue metallic, 2.5 Iron Duke auto - before I had my own car, I used to frequently bum a ride home with an girl a grade ahead of me. I always thought the interior was quite nice, and she kept it clean.
87 SE, white coupe, 3.0 V6 auto, sunroof, loaded - another girl I used to bum a ride home from, and ended up dating senior year and through college, 4.5 years. Her dad owned a collision repair business, and I was always amazed that the car withstood her abuse. (3+ significant accidents) My first GA drive. I frequently drove it too, including on road trips halfway across the country. Loved the light gray interior, extra courtesy lights, gauges, digital odometer, status computer, body-color wheels, smoked-look SE tails, etc. Although my Corsica only had 5~10 less HP, the car felt totally different. I know she even missed it when her dad insisted on replacing it with a Saturn SL2. Looks like I still have a pic...

89 LE, dark blue metallic coupe, LD2 Quad 4 w/ 5-speed - dude went to Vo-tech with me. Saw/heard him take off from a red light once... and it sounded badass, especially compared to the other blue GA I was used to getting rides in... I liked that "sleeper" element. He usually participated in the challenges from the few shit-talking car enthusiasts. He beat em all, including a manual 3.1 MPFI V6 Cavy Z24 that I thought for sure would win. Guess that's when I first noticed the Quad 4, for its abilities.
My ex's cousin (same g/f with the 88 SE) had a burgundy 89 LE Quad 4 auto coupe. The car was totaled after being hit by a school bus... got my first look at the Quad 4 engine itself in the back of her dad's shop. There was also a bright red 93 SE sedan (3300 V6 auto) that sat in the back junk yard area for several years. That's the first time I really took notice of the 92-95's, especially the nice dark (graphite) interior. I was fired up for HO Quad 4's at that time (I test drove a 90 Beretta GTZ) and became really interested in the 92-95 GT's when I found out you could get it with a HO Quad 4 / 5-speed.
When I needed to replace my dead Corsica, I couldn't find any GA's or GTZ's with a Quad 4 (well one with obvious hidden collision damage) so I settled on a 94 GT 3100 auto, black coupe. Totaled that 6 months later :( and came upon my current red 95 GT. That red 93 SE was still sitting at my ex's dad's shop, and actually that's how I obtained my folding rear seat.
Wow... that was long, but as you can see, it wasn't just 1 GA that got me interested. (and actually that first Quad 4 HO test drive in the GTZ also had a lot of influence)

My step-fathers 89 GA LE Iron Duke. Thing was slow as hell but he convinced me to get my 2000 since his lasted till 97 when he gave it to my sister. Know I know that engine was nearly impossible to kill but still didn't stop me from buying a second GA.

i was looking at new 2004 grand prix gtp comp g's and finally decided i couldnt afford it.. so the next day at school (college) i see this grand am (4 door sc/t black chrome torque rims) and said Damn!! thats a sharp car... so i went to the dealer the next day, he showed me the grand prix gtp comp g that just came in in the color i wanted... asked about grand ams, they didnt have a 2 door sct when i pulled in as i had looked... well sometime between when i got there and when i asked about them a black 2 door was dropped off as a dealer trade.... took her for a spin with just .3 miles on it signed the papers and the rest is history

My first run in with a grand am...I was 16, just got my lisence. My dad tells me he found the car I was going to buy. He took me out in the country and said here it is. Turned out to be a 1989 Grand Am LE, it had the Iron Duke. I rember it being what I called quick, but, prolly just because my buddy had a 1982 Mercury Cougar(POS).

I'm 17 and my 99 GAGT was my mom's. She used to have a nice mustang and that was supposed to be mine until one of my brothers totaled it. :( Anywho, she gave it to me last year when i got my license. Since about 2 months ago I've been feeling the need to mod it. :) My aunt has a silver 03 GA thats pretty nice. So i'd have to say my first time in a GA was mine when my mom had it.

few of my friends had older one's as 'beaters', and honestly i was surprised by the reliability and still had some looks... then the 5th gen's came out, and for a few years i kept staring at them... then the sc/t package came out, sold! fell in love with those.
my current beater blew up, a 89 Plymouth Horizon, and I didnt want to drive the t/a in the winter... so I went to the dealership, asked them what the cheapest new car was that wasn't a sunfire. Then they gave me a few choices including a 02 gt leftover... I heard all about the ecotec motor's and wanted to stick with this motor. Had my choice between my black one, 2 silver one's, a white one, and i think the greystone... went with black at the end of July in 03. Didn't start modding it until the following spring, think my first mod were the PFYC Strut Bar's.

similar to my s-10 experience, my dad bought it when i was 7, had to decide between it and a nissan pickup. after he test drove the nissan, i remember punching it, trying to put a dent in it so he would buy the s-10 instead.
he bought the s-10 and i inherited it when i got my temps.

I just recently purchased my GAGT, a massive change when you were previously driving a 92' tempo around. It's white, sexy, detailed, and I love it. I have to say i believe this is my virgin post on this forum as well.. Looking to mod soon and a friend directed me here.

Well, not behind the wheel: A classmate of mine and I had to go to the other high school for some lumber. So we hop in his car. 92-95 (don't know what year exact) GA, Cigarrete smoke scented interior (he smoked), and trash all over. Didn't really think about GA's then.
First behind the wheel: Driver's ed Day 1. Parking lot practice and we get to choose which car we wanted. Of course, everyone wanted the Cavalier coupe or the Intrigue sport sedan. I chose a white 1999 Grand Am with the 2.4. Fun car to move around the parking lot. Even more fun to drive. When I found a similar, but older GA, I went for it.
I remember my first time quite clearly. My sister had just gotten her driver's license and my uncle had a spare car he needed rid of, he sold it to my sister for $300. It turned out to be a '88 Grand Am w/ 2.0 Turbo engine. It had something like 188k miles on it, but man did it run. It could break the tires loose pretty easy and ran good, until it threw a rod and cracked the block while on the interstate one day. I was too young to know much about cars back then or we'd still have it and it would have been turned into a project car.

I became really interested in about 2000 when my mom bought a 99-00 SE. It had all the options except v6 and leather. I loved it and then my wife and I were car shopping in 04 when I talked her into a 04 SE. In 06 I was really interested in the Grand Prix's and went car shopping for one. I stopped at a chrysler dealership to look at an WRX STI and decided $318/mo was a "little" outta my range. I hopped in my Prix and saw a sexy looking black car, with the chrome wheels. I sped to it hopped outta my car and fell in love with the car. lol sounded like a love story

My first time in one was on the test drive of the one I own now :D
I was down to either the GA or a Stratus R/T. Both similar performance, size and cost. The one thing the Stratus had going for it was a manual tranny, but I liked the looks of the GA better and had always been a GM guy. Plus, Dodge's build quality was way too iffy.

This is my second grand am, but Kinda my first because the first had a blown 3100. I drove a 97 cutlass supreme before this for about 1.5 year also with a 3100, but man my 99 with the 3400 moves!. My cutty you had to floor it to spin this puppy spins on 1/4. and from a w-body down to this. i love the look and the power! never drove a 2.2/2.4 one but my ant has a 03 maroon and feels juiceee as long as its not full of people 3400 is a too big motor for this car i think a 3100 would have been fine. thanks for the 3400 i love it. Its got massive testiculars

i went to a dealership in october of 2006. my dad had just sold his 2004 Monte Carlo (which i drove on my learners) and and bought a 2006 GTO M6, which he wouldnt let me drive. the dealership had a deal claiming "$0 down $99/month!" however that was for ONE chrysler sebring... the guy showed me the sebring, then a kia. i told him i like domestic cars better and the sebring was too small. so i sat in dodge neon, but the problem was again, too small. i asked him if he had any chevy's in the parking lot. he said no, but he did have a Pontiac. i knew nothing about grand am's at the time. he took me over and showed me a Champagne Beige Metallic sedan with the chromatech wheels. i instantly became interested as the car looked great. i sat down and it felt almost identical to the Monte Carlo (right down to the ignition switch being in the dash). i test drove it and loved it. i drove it home that day and have driven it almost every day since

I used to know a guy I worked with years ago that had a grand am, I had always loved the looks of these cars and the GP's. This is when they still had GA commericals on TV, the widetrack! lol
He took myself and a few friends for a ride home one day, inside was nice, sound system (stock) was quite decent, for my age at the time "17" I never thought I would own one of these cars when they are so new.
When I was 20 I went looking for a nice car since I had the money and job at the time. Was tired of going through $1000 cars every few months. Was looking for a GP when I saw this orange car in a dealer lot out of the corner of my eye on the highway.
All in all I slapped 2g's down on the car right away and took the rest out in a loan, only have 2g's left on the loan now and she's all mine lol yeeha

First would have been my Grandfather's 86, or 87 LE, had the v6 I think, rode around in it all the time, thought it was a nice looking car.
When I had my 86 Camaro, a girl i worked with had a 92-95 se coupe, and I just always loved the look of the car, so when it came time to replace my Camaro I had it in my head that it was going to be a GA, and thats' when I found my 96. That car served me very well for the 8 years I had it, but now I am on to somethign different :) I will miss my GA though.

I was probably like 13-14 and I was with my mom at work and one of her colleagues had a GA, maroon, SE I believe and we had to go somewhere to build a float and we rode in her GA. I remember she had the A/C on full blast and all the windows open.
Then I have mine!

first time in a GA, it was in high school. my friend's husband (boyfriend at the time) had a 98, still does. and it was cramped as hell and we fit 6 people in the car, with my girlfriend (at the time) sitting on my lap. hit my head on the rear window and left a mark

My first time in a grand am was in my friends 98GT it was four cylinder not near as cool looking as mine but heck I liked it. I would see GrandAm's all over the place and wanted one. I got my chance of course. Found mine and took it for a ride on May 19th this year. I was hooked. Now I've got it a month and a half and I really like my car for the first time I have a car that I think looks good no matter what.

My first experience in my GA was July 2004. My '84 Prelude had just blown up and i knew i needed a new car. I had test drove an Aveo a few months before, knowing the 'Lude was on its last leg. I thought the Aveo was crazy fast cuz the prelude was on 2 1/2 cylinders. Drove a dark blue hatchback Aveo and was kinda set on that.
That lasted until i went car shopping with mom and pop. Got to the dealership and told the guy what my price range was and that i didnt want a Sunfire. He said "Well, with your price range, it's Sunfire city today." I said "Have a nice day" and we left. Jerkoff. Went to a neighboring dealership and the guy showed me a Silver 2004 with the 3400 V-6. I was intrigued so he went to get the keys for a test drive. My mom, of all people, spotted the 5 speed Ecotec. When the guy came back we sent him back inside to get the keys for the 5 speed. Me and pops test drove it and I called my mom while driving and told her to get started on the paperwork. Signed after my test drive and took it home. Loved every minute of it.
Side Note: Kind of a ironic/funny story. After about a month my ECM went out and i had to go to the dealer to have it fixed. I was given a rental and it ended up being a Chevy Aveo. I realized that i made a MUCH better choice with the GA. The aveo was like a tin can with wheels.
My first time was actually less than a week ago haha.
huge day for me. it was the first time i had EVER driven a mid-sized car (95 plymouth voyager and a 01 suzuki vitara were the only cars i drove before). I was at a small dealers and originally went for an escort. FORTUNATELY it sold before i got there. Then i saw this white 99 GAGT. For a first car, its a dream. Completely loaded and i got it for $3,300 including tax and title. Driven it since (LATE at night on a back road cause i still need insurance money to get plates ha) and it's so much nicer than anything i've driven or even my friends cars. I'm insanely proud of it.

I know it's old now... but first time? Well, it wasn't in a car.
I was never too familiar about GAGTs. I also never knew anyone that had a GAGT nor had saw any around my neighborhood, school, and work. I wanted a slightly larger car than my previous Z24 and I was actually going to buy an Alero. I searched the web about the Alero and actually ended up here, looking through the GAGT pictures. I thought the styling was supremely better than a bland looking Alero so I started my search to find my GAGT.
