i have a 1993 grand am with a 2.3 quad 4 ohc. i cant find any place that sells parts for it. im hoping that someone on this forum can either help me find performance parts or let me know of a popular engine swap that i can do to make it faster. i know a 3.4 with a supercharger has been done, does anybody know if you can fit a 3.8 in it? i would also like to keep in a manual if possible so if there are any good engine swaps that have a manual trans that would be greatly appreciated. my goal is to atleast creep into the 13's with performance mods. please help me if you have any insight for me. thanks.

Your best bet would be to do the popular DOHC conversion. The SOHC is the least powerful Grand Am motor other than the Iron Duke... but the DOHC version is the highest rated in terms of horsepower (up to 180).

The 3.8 is a completely different engine design, meaning a lot of custom work that would be expensive and aggravating. With a DOHC Quad, the 13s are quite possible. Quad4Forums has a few members that are running low 13s, and spy on these and other forums is in the 12s.

My recommendation is to get your hands on a used or remanufactured DOHC engine and build it up. If you have a daily driver other than your GA you could just convert the one you have, but otherwise you'd be better off building a separate motor on a stand.

EDIT: The Quad 4 DOHC High Output was always coupled with a 5-speed (IIRC). Typically (not always) if you can find the engine a 5-speed Isuzu transmission or a Muncie-Getrag will be included. For lots of power, the Getrag seems to be the transmission of choice... however the Isuzu isn't going to fall apart on you either.

wow another transfer post from quadforums. I am onlink67 over there. As we said you you then just do a DOHC conversion no one would make parts for the SOHC because its pointless. This is the best bang for your buck. 3800 swap is nearly impossible and most people who have to ask wouldn't be able to do it. As for 3400 you will make more HP out of your quad.

lets go a little bit easier on you. You quad does have a lot of potential like we have told you before. The SOHC to DOHC swap is very populare and if you look in the 2.3L section on this site you will at least 2 people that have done it in the last 2 months and they are very happy with the extra power. Doing this swap right you will go from your 130hp to 150-190 depending on the parts you use.

Keep in mind your driveability may suffer if you have an automatic transaxle. The DOHC versions of the engine (particularly the HO, which is one of the most popular conversions) produce their power at engine speeds that the automatic transaxle typically doesn't reach.

Well now that would effect it's drivability, that might effect it reaching it's peak power potential. Big difference.

It looks like hes a manual but if hes doing anything like he did on q4forums he heard things he didn't want to hear so hes probably moving onto gagt or something right now lol.
