Hope this goes here.

I wanted to put a dash cluster from an 87 into my 86, since I dont know the first thing about electronics in a vehicle, I wanted to ask you all first.

The 87 version is different with a tach, a better speedo, more importantly gauges that work! 86 doesnt have a tach, I was wondering if that would work.

With my Camaro, it only mattered generation to generation as to whether or not the cluster would fit and work. I could take a non-tached version of the cluster and plop it in without issue.

While I cannot confirm the exact electronics differences, if the 85-91 GA's are similar to the 92-95, then you can swap clusters provided that the donor cluster comes from a car with the same engine type (I4 vs V6). Optionally, you'll also need to change the oil pressure switch for an oil pressure sender to make that oil pressure gauge function correctly.

I wouldn't try that cluster with the digital odometer though, since there's likely other electronics required to make that function.
