I wrote earlier about water in oil. I took the heads off only to find out here that my problem was at the intake gaskets not head. Well I was just putting the thing back together and was tightening the rocker arms. My manual says to torque to 168 then second step was rotate 30 degrees. My click tourque wrentch only shows up to 159 and I only tourqued it to about 150. Well one bolt tightened then went loose...stripped but the bolt looks fine.
My Question is is there any way to get this tapped and then get a special rocker arm bolt that would work or do I need to get new heads? I can't believe they tell you to torque so high and the threads can't handle it.
Any ideas??
THX.

Yea, there's a fix for the stripped threads. You drill it, tap it and install a Heli-coil that returns the hole to the original size.

I'm no expert but 168 sounds like a really high torque spec for a bolt. Maybe the threads were already damaged when you started.

IIRC its 168 In/lbs. If you did it in ft/lbs you probably did it WAYYYY too tight.

Youre right it is inch pounds...shi* I did all rocker bolt about 150 ft pounds, with the one that stripped it was the last 30 degrees in the second step that stripped it. I feel so stupid and it was only about another 1/10 of a turn (30 degrees) that did it.
Well since I over-torqued all do you think I should get new heads even though only one is stripped. Or should I try to drill the one bad hole and put a heli-coil in?

Opinions?

Nice!!!!!

Just giving you a hard time. You wont believe how many people have made that mistake and come to post to about a stripped bolt. Just try to helicoil and just keep an eye on them. Pull off the valve covers after a few thousand to check each one.

Well, you 're not the only one that has done it so you're not the dumbest. It's just a mistake and many people will have learned from it. Think of yourself as a teacher!

I would drill out the bad one and inspect the other ones too. You may have damaged the threads and they might pop out after multiple heat cycles. Put a coil in any holes that are questionable so you don't have to do it later.

Two more question about this. 1. Should I loosen all the other rocker arms and tighten them to specs or what?
2.Every rocker arm when hand snuged the the push rods all fit up into the notches except on on each side. I checked to make sure they all were snug but 1 on each side were real loose. Is this normal? I haven't tried to turn crank to see if lifters would change this but I thought it was odd that only one on each side would be loose like this.

Thanks in advance for the advice.

My first thought about your first question was to say "remove them and inspect the threads".

I really don't know if it's better to leave them alone or remove and retorque. Maybe some of the professional mechanics and engineers that are here could advise. I guess I would leave them alone until someone has a definate answer. It won't do anymore damage by leaving them as they are for now.

man your lucky all you stripped out is one. 150 ft/lbs is a ton. Most wheels are only supposed to be torqued to 100 ft/lbs.

Yea he was talking about the rockers though. I knew what you meant.

i was comparing the the two. Wheels are 100 Ft/lbs. He torqed to 150 Ft/lbs as opposed to 150 In/lbs.

Another example why DIY is not always the inexpensive way to go. I bet all threads are pulled some. Time will tell.
