Well after only having the CR-V for 8 months they traded it in, my dad has a bad back and had trouble getting in and driving...

So they got an 07 Buick Lucerne CXL... Dont laugh! All it really is is Buick's version of the new Caddy DeVille (DTS) but dont get me wrong it is a really nice car...My mom used to have a 99 DeVille then an 01 Deville...

The CXL is the middle model, the L stands for leather, which is tan. They also got the Northstar V8, even though my dad didnt want to, he wanted the 3800

Now for the goodies... Power Moonroof, XM Radio, OnStar, DVD Navigation, Heated and COOLED (FTW in AZ!) 8 way power seats, Premium 9 speaker Harmon/Kardon Sound system, Heated Lether steering wheel and Gearknob. It also has 235/55/17's with a 7 Spoke Pearl Nickel Finish, and the car is painted Goldmist Metallic (Light Light Brown with a Gold/Silver Flake)...

The Northstar V8 is also nice and punchy, 275hp at 6000rpms and 300 trq at 4400. Turn of the TC and i used to be able to light the tires up in the old DeVille. Out of the box she will run mid 15's in a quarter mile, not to bad for a 4000 pound car... The ride is superb, and road noise is non-existant, she handles OK for a large car but far from agile...

Now for the bad news, my mom tanked up and she only got around 21mpg FTL!!!

Price wise, my dad is a swanky negotiator, he used to be a car salesman... We got 17,500 for the 07 CRV (they paid cash for the CRV so it was paid off), plus the Lucerne was an 07 leftover, the car was actually made in Sep 06, it sat on the lot for a long time... The price was 38,000 plus 2500 rebates and my dads skill brought it down to 31,000... So for the fist time, in a long time my parents have a car loan...

P.S. I dont have a digi cam so no pics...

Nice, good looking cars IMO, but not my style.
GM is dropping the ball with that old Northstar. At one point it was the modern motor t have, but now it's just old news. Shoot, even Nissan makes that much power from a N/A 3.5 liter V6 along with many other manufactures that are all in about that area.

Make sure they use synthetic oil in the motor, it should say it in the manual.
If they don't and something goes wrong with the motor, it won't be covered under the warranty.

Nothing wrong with old-school rides.

My dad drives a Caddy SDV with the old 4.9L V8 ( pre-northstar).Its not my preference in cars, but its nice in its own, land-yacht way. Its more fun to ride in the back then drive though.

yeah just as John said, it is an old motor, it came out in 95 with only a few minor changes.... it *used* to be an innovative motor...

really? i havent herad anything like that... we never used synthetic in the old caddy's Northstars...

our 99 DeVille was a lemon, burned about a quart every 1k, if you punched it black smoke came outta the exhaust, we had 120k when we traded that one..

then our 01 we puchased she had 50k and we traded at 98K with having done nothing but oil changes, she burned a quart every 3k...

Yeah it takes 7.5 quarts of oil, so it will be a bitch to pay for if we have to put synthetic....

Double check the manual, I'd be very surprised if it isn't stated in there somewhere. Hell I even think it's under the hood somewhere, maybe the oil cap says Mobil 1.
I worked for Jiffy lube a few years back and had this discussion with customers on many occasions, they fought me like crazy till I had them bring me the owners manual and I found it for them. Once they saw it in the manual they changed there attitude. I'm not trying to start a fight, I just don't want to see your parents get screwed.

Dead link :(

:???: huh it worked for me... it is a PDF file, it basically just gives most of the everyday oils... Walmart Supertech is approved, Penzoil, Castrol GTX, Mobil 1, Ac Delco, Chevron Oil...

It gives a non synthetic oil first, then rattles off about 4 synthetics to choose from...

Goldmist Metallic, is that the metallic brown color?

And if you think 21MPG from a northstar is bad, my Camaro with the 3800 averages 19MPG.

i get 35 mpg.............if i add up all 3 vehicles

i guess you could say i drive like i'm dead too. it's a rare occassion my trailblazer or my truck sees the north side of 3000....at least under normal driving conditions. the grand am, when it was running, was a different story. what i thought was normal acceleration i'd rev the poor little car up to 4000 without even really realizing it  and forget about pulling out in front of someone hoping to get out of their way real fast

:agree: it a shame too as the Northstar really perks up in the 3000+ range!!!
