I just got me a 2001 SE1 Grand AM to replace my 92 GA (crap) and thought I see about using some of the audio hardware I bought for my old car.

First, everything in the car is factory and I do not have a monsoon HU.

I thought I would replace the 6x9s in the back since that seemed the easiest compared to the fronts or replacing the HU and then I find out something rather odd to me.

For some reason my pioneer 6x9s almost sound worse then the stock. While the stock really dont have any bass, the pioneers act as if they have to much, on some songs I dont even have to have the vol half way up and I can hear them disorting while other times I have to se the bass on the EQ to 4+.

Any ideas why the bass is all over the map, would puting my kenwoon hu fix the problem?

On the front doors, our the 4x6's used for just bass since I have tweeters up near the mirror? If I put in my pioneer 4x6s can I still use the tweeter by the mirror or can I just use one or the other? Suggestions on that?

How do I get the faceplate covering the stock HU off?

One other suggestion I need is this:

I also have a 10" 400w sub and a 600w 4ch amp. in my old car the sub was on ch C&D while I hooked the front door speakers to A&B with my rear 6x9s bridge on ch A&B as well. For my needs this seems to work rather well but the setup in the 2001 sounds almost as good.

So should I just maybe replace the speakers and HU and leave the sub/amp out or add them?

OH YES! What is the fuse and little white box thats in the top middle of the 6x9 speakers for?

did your stock 6x9s have 4 wires going to them or just two. if 4, which two did you use? that could be your problem.

if you isntall the pioneer 4x6 speakers then id recommend disconnectiong the factory tweeters since they will add too much high frequency for most listeners ears. if oyu like lots of highs then leave em there and see what it sounds like.

the sub and amp are totally up to you. if you want, you can use bass blockers on the 6x9s and then add the sub, thatll solve your problem with the 6x9s inconsistency of low end frequency.

I personally would check the 6x9's voice coil.

When the bass is all over the place, does it hit some notes ok, and some notes sound like sh*t? If so, i would be inclined to think voice coils on those speakers. :(

The speakers only have 2 wires.

As for the bass being all over the place. What I ment is on one song with the vol set at say 10 I get distorting with the EQ bass at 2+ but then on another song I can have the bass eq at 4+ with the vol at 15 without any distortion.

Seems like I have to change the EQ for every song played which you might guess gets old fast.

Now I need read that this can be caused by the stock HU since it can provided the power the speakers need. How true is this?

are you using cd-rs? if so that could be part of your problem with the variance in bass. ive downloaded some songs that will be twice as loud as the song that played before it.

I'VE never had a problem with not giving enough power to a speaker. this is strictly a guess but im going to guess that the factory hu is putting out 10-15 watts of power. that should be enough to make the speakers sound ok, but the more power you can feed them (to an extent) the better
