Well as the title states I am wondering if I can simply drop in the 3100 in place of the 2.4 or will there have to be some modifications done. The reason I ask is because the car needs an engine and I dont think the junkyard has a 2.4 on the premises so I am trying to get a quick fix.

Ok, thats what I was trying to figure out, what was throwing me off was that there are V6 models in the same year as the 98 that i have to get an engine for. Thanks

there isn't a single 2.4 in the whole junkyard? Unless its a smaller junkyard thats rare. I can normally buy one up here for 200-300

last time i went i didnt see one but i wasnt looking that hard. will a 2.4 from any other car work just as well? my knowledge of the 2.4 motors equals 0.

yes but a 99.5 2.4 will need the injectors changed to the low impedance ones you have on now and has no egr

well you can get it from an achieva, cavi, sunfire, grand am. There were a bunch of cars with the 2.4 just don't go over 98 and you should be safe.

ok thanks
any car with a 2.4L from 1996-1998 will suit you just fine.
The only things that MAY be different from different cars may be mounts, but that just means you pull the mounts off of your messed up 2.4L and slap them onto the new one.
HEY by chance when you do find a new motor do you want to get rid of the toasted one? What's wrong with it?

I'm not too sure of whats wrong with it, as I am helping a friend out but from my understanding she let it run hot. First she told me that the heads were bad but now she says the she was told that she would come out better replacing the whole engine.

She let it overheat? there's only one head on a 2.4L by the way.

actually spy the timing chain broke and bent some valves and other things supposedly got messed up, but i found out today that it actually has a 2.3 in it. And just my luck I could only locate two of those in the area, cheaper one is 100 miles away..... :(

wait it has a 2.3? I thought this was for a 98?
if it's anything 1996 and newer w/ a 4cyl.. it's a 2.4l 100%

I have a spare good head unless your heart set on a new engine

Ralph I would definately go the route of using your head but i've never taken an engine apart and I dont know what other parts I would need to replace, all I know right now is that the timing chain broke and bent some valves. So that means the timing chain has to be replaced, then some valves, and......?? My mechanical skils stop at the point where i have to take then engine apart or work on the transmission. :(
