I have a 96 and a 97 pontiac grand am gt. My 96s (2.4) air bag light came on recently. Came on while I was driving at the beginning. Then it stayed on continously after start up today.

History: My buddy and I swapped the interiors so we just unhooked the neg terminal and removed the air bag fuse and unplugged the plugs under the dash. I live in upstate New York and it rained while my window was open in November and left a big puddle behind the passenger seat. I got most of it out with wet vac yet I think some got under the passenger seat and froze. Under the passenger seat I noticed there was an airbag unit under there when I removed the carpet. I removed a portion of the carpet to look and a frozen piece of carpet underlay was frozen to the unit so I pulled it off. I checked the fuse, the plugs under the dash and in steering wheel and they are all connected properly. Any ideas or pointers from here?

The airbag sensor under the seat was probably damaged by the water. This is common, since many GA's have interior water leaks.

You could try replacing the module, but it may be more useful if you get the diagnostic codes from the SIR module/DERM first.
