dumb question

This is probably one of the dumbest questions ever......... but i'll ask it anyway just because i'm trying to learn all i can and what not. I know it it bad for the car to rev it in park/neutral to high RPMs, hence the 4k rev limiter. But why? Why is this worse than running it to like 6k in gear?

there's no load on the engine and it could easily over rev and damage it

also iirc it's there so you can do a CASE learn
