This might be a basic question, but it's easier to ask here than to go look around the car right now. On the 2.4L twin cam, is it easier to change the exhaust manifold (upstream) oxygen sensor from the top, or from underneath the car?
Also, is it positioned in such a way that an O2 sensor socket is required, or can you reach it with a wrench on this engine?
Thanks!

On the V6's like mine and Doobiess, a looooonnnnnnggg extension and the special universal O2 socket are necessary.
On your 4-cyl, it's right there on top of the exhaust manifold behind the engine, exposed to god and everybody.
An ordinary open-end or adjustable wrench is all that's necessary.
Good luck,

Thanks alot! If only the bolts that hold the heat shield will come out, I will probably replace that today. It's not failed but since everyone says it's a tune-up item, this is the only thing I haven't checked/changed on this car.

It was really easy to do on my '98. Three easy 10mm bolts on the heat shield and it was sitting right there. I had rented the O2 sensor socket from Autozone just to be on the safe side. Removal and reinstallation was a snap.

I always use my O2 sensor socket, and usually some extensions and/or swivels. Sure, you might be able to use a wrench on it, but I believe in knuckle conservation.

above, but i agree with matt95gt use the o2 sensor socket or your knuckles will pay

Update for future readers: 7/8" box end wrench with a cheater bar applied to break the sensor loose worked just fine. A socket might have been hard to use because of some of the lines that would have been in the way. I was amazed that the 10mm bolts on the heat shield weren't rusted in place. The best part, no broken/scarred knuckles. Thanks guys (and gals, if applicable).

by the way ... a proper o2 sensor socket has a slice up the side for room to have the wire go through .. so otherwise a o2 socket is still much easier

It's a bit late to mention it now, but getgmparts.com has the lowest OEM Delphi O2 sensors I could find anywhere.

Oh yeah, it's not up at the GetGMParts site.
Give em a call. They seem to have a lot of stock that's not on the site.
