Are you talking about a quad 4 HO? Other then the HO all other Quads had an auto option.

there is no turbo quad 4 engine. A few people have turbo'd them but never factory. HO 90-92 180hp, 93 175 hp, 94 170hp. LO was between 160 and 150 the whole time. W41 spec engine is between 185 and 190 hp. All this was made with different heads, cams, pistons, crank pulleys, manifolds, and little things here and there. The HO and W41 cams are made to make their power at higher RPMs so and Auto would not be idle unless you build it and program the ecu to rev up high.

Did quad 4 HO's just come in manual transmissions?

Yes there was no auto option on the HOs every HO for every car it was in was a 5 speed.

Best auto to use with the quad is the 4T40 I believe..Dont get the 3 speed...its garbage and may come with problems such as the TCC wont shut off when slowing down from high speeds so it stalls out your engine.

Plus the 3 speed auto is a dog. When I still had my GA, I had the LD2 w/ the 3 Speed, and passing was something you would never attempt on anything but a very visible and long stretch of highway during the slow part of the day.
Anyways, All LD2 Quad 4's and the L40 Quad OHC came with the option of an automatic transmission (Many did). If you had the LG0 (High Output), you could only get it with the 5 speed since the HO makes its power at higher RPM's, which is not something you'll get very easily with the auto trans. Infact, it is not a good idea to try to convert a LD2 mounted to a auto trans into a LG0 or a W41 (Oldsmobile) without converting the car over to a manual transaxle. If you made a LG0 or W41 an automatic, it would be slower than the LD2.

SOHC and DOHC were both available with automatic transmissions.
DOHC HO or W41 only came with a 5-speed. The reason behind this is that the engine configuration produces its power at engine speeds higher than automatic transmissions like. Your car would actually be slower in your day-to-day driving with a HO or W41 mated to an automatic.

Are you guys shure there was no auto option with the high output my friend had bought an old grand am for a racecar and it was an automatic and he said it was a highoutput but maybe he was mistaken. I'm pretty shure ther was no engine ever done.

Positive... HO must be paired with 5-speed.
He either doesn't know what he's talking about, or someone grabbed the entire HO IDI cover when repairing the ignition system.

My guess is the same as matts probably had a IDI swapped on before he bought it or something. Because of where the HO makes power the Automatic on an HO would probably be slower then a LO. This is assuming that it is a stock automatic.
