This is regarding my 97 Camaro RS, with the 3800 and 65k miles. Auto tranny.

I noticed an issue a few days ago and only realized how bad it was this morning. On my way into work I noticed my acceleration wasn't what it should be. So at the next stop I gun it. The engine revs up to 6000 RPM but the car has only gotten up to 25MPH. Also, when I am at speed and stomp the gas it doesn't want to downshift.

Now I am going to check the tranny fluid during my lunch break, but what other possibilities could be causing this issue? I pray that it is nothing major since I bought the car only 2 months ago.

Got a 3800 Firebird myself. I think they don't take advantage of these engine's powerband properly. Times when I think it should downshift, it doesn't.

Anyway...

Sounds like something is up in the tranny. Definitely, if you are pushing 6000 in D, you should be going somewhere!! Any warranty from the dealer?

It was bought from an individual. So no warranty.

From what I have heard so far it seems to be the torque converter.

Torque comvertor, or the tranny is low on oil. You see any leaks under it?

^ It's not oil. Its fluid, automatic transmission fluid, not ATO... Anyway, it sounds like it is your TC, and if its not that, your f-d, so we hope that its just a TC

I am going to be taking the car in for service early this week. Now should I take it to a general mechanic, or should I take it to a transmission specialist?

And I am really hoping it is something stupid that won't cost me a fortune to fix. I had my share of that with my 99 GA, when I had to pay $1700 a month after buying it to fix the notorious LIM gasket.

Take it to a tranny specialist, afterall that is what your problem is, it's most likely the TC
