All,

Glad I found a good technical forum on these cars! Seems like everyone here is generous and really takes pride in helping others out. Please excuse my ignorance, my experience is only with European cars, mostly VW and Bmw.
Background:
My girlfriend has an 03 Grand Am, 3400 V6 with approx 78K mi. Recently I noticed the classic sounds of hydraulic lifter tapping. It does it when cold and then goes away. I realize this is a fairly "minor" problem, and should not be a threat immediately. However, doing some reading on here I ran across the "LIM" or Lower Intake Manifold problem.
Problem:
I decided to inspect it closer to see of any telltale leakage signs. Well, I could not find any signs of coolant leaking from around the manifold area. I looked into the coolant reservoir and to my dismay found lots of oil residue/sludge in it! I checked the oil dipstick and it seems ok, not foamy like it gets when mixed with water.
Questions:
Could this still be a LIM problem? OR is it more likely to be headgasket? How do I know which LIM her car has? Was it revised at some point to prevent gasket leak?
At the moment the cars seems to run ok, water temp hits almost 200 in traffic-is this ok? Please advise, thanks everyone!

I noticed when I cleaned out my bottle that it has some sludge, but I never have had the LIM problem per se. I had to replace it because the thermostate housing cracked. I would just top off the fluids and keep an eye on them. Unless your loosing a lot of coolant or your oil is turning a milky color I wouldn't worry about it. As for temperature my car stays around 200 unless it is really hot and I'm not moving it'll hit 220.

As far as I know all 3400's are susceptible to LIM failure, but not all do. I have 120k on mine and never had a problem with the gasket.

IMO you have an LIM leak.
Strop driving it and fix it.

Coupe, I don't believe that oil in the coolant is a LIM leak. To the OP, are you sure it isn't Dex-cool sludge? It leaves a bit of a residue. The cooling system is pressurized so it would be hard to be getting oil in there, not that it can't happen.
BTW, 200 is close to fine, the thermostat is a 195*.

That's what I'm thinking as well. If it was a LIM leak the coolant would be going to the oil, not vice versa (at least under typical operating conditions). I wouldn't 100% rule it out, but I wouldn't jump to that first.

When mine went i had oil and coolant mixing with each other, both in the oil and both in the coolant. It was a mess.

I just came back to this site after a long break to see if there was anything new on the LIM issue, my car is laid up after coolant dumped into the engine when it failed. The oil level was over full and it looked like Yoo Hoo, didn't notice anything new in the coolant system. I've always thought oil in there meant head gasket.

That would be a good sign of the LIM it not a hard job but it takes a while. There are several good write ups on the site for doing it. Make sure you get the revised felpro gasket set.

I'm too busy making Toyota Tundra parts to fix anything. It will be a local mechanic for that job but I will make sure and get the good gaskets, Thanks.
It will be a while tho, have to pay the sales tax on my new G5 GT:D

Maybe not....

I've had this problem @ 75k miles.

Checked my coolant resivour and behold... brown gunky coolant. Oil dipstick looked normal.

Took it to the shop, they cleaned my resivour and put new dex cool in it. Haven't had problems since. (Knock on wood)

also a bad overflow cap can cause dexcool to sludge.
