View Full Version : AUX Input on factory headunit?

Hey all,
I have an XM radio setup in my 2002 GA. Yeah I know, XM comes factory installed in the '03s, but I couldn't wait a year. :) Anyway, my current setup (which I hate) uses the factory headunit and an FM modulator to get the sound from the XM receiver into the stereo. The sound quality, as you can guess, is pretty crappy coming through that modulator... depending on the day, I get lots of background hiss.
So, I'm looking for something better. Unfortunately, getting a different, aftermarket headunit is a ways off (gotta save the cash), but, I keep seeing "AUX" labeled on the same button as the CD button on the factory radio that came with the car (see attached photo).
I'd like to just rip out the FM mod and connect the XM receiver directly to that auxillary input... Does anyone know if this can be done (assuming the radio even has one), and if so, how does someone activate the AUX input? Pushing the button only selects the CD player (of course), but nothing else.
Thanks in advance for any help!

The radio has to be XM Ready in order to run it without the FM modulator.
If the aux input is a standard line level, and the output of the XM is standard line level then there is no problem what so ever. You just have to figure out how to wire it up.

So can I take this to mean there is in fact an auxiliary input on this radio? If so, how do I get the radio to recognize it? If I press that button now, it will switch to the CD player but will not switch to AUX.
For the record, the XM unit is a Delphi SkyFi radio, which does output line level.

On my '03 Monsoon HU, there is no Aux input on the back.

IIRC the Aux on Monsoon head units is for using a CD changer in the trunk...

As I rember there is a site that sells this thing can use the AUX, plug it up behind the HU and you have RCA Jacks got to see if I can find that site.

Hey, I have a questions, alittle off topic, but onmy Alpine, it is XM-ready, so they tell you the extra tuner package made by Alpine that I would use to get the XM......only thing is I am wondering, that tuner thing comes with a seperate display to tell you the channel/song etc... but I though my HU would control all that and display the channel etc.... in the manual it even says, when the XM tuner is hooked up, XM1/XM2/XM3 will become available for sources, but then I would have to mount that little screen thing somewhere?
I don't understand it I guess.... my father has the Delphi SkyFi thing with XM, I perfer Sirrius , but Alpine only uses XM, so XM I will get.

As long as your Alpine unit is IP-bus enabled, it should be able to control the XM tuner without th edisplay. In fact, if you can find a place that sells just the tuner without the display, it'll be $99 cheaper for ya.

That's the thing, I don't want to buy the whole kit, and have that extra display f I don't need it.
Right now, all I need is the tuner, and an antenna, then just to subscribe to XM, I hate buying cd's (funny becuase I am.....well used to be far more into home audio and have one hell of a sound system at home) But I can't justify spending $18 on a CD with 12 songs, and only half of them are good, so I don't buy CD's $10/month for unlimited music of any type is nothing, I see it as almost half the price of 1 CD, and this is unlimited......

I've been trying to find some way to get XM onto my factory Monsoon deck without the FM modulator too, but I just keep running into dead ends. Might as well bite the bullet and buy a nice aftermarket deck and go that route.

My HU looks just like scaredpoets, except it is the MP# monsoon version.
Has anyone found a way to add RCA inputs to the back, or a pinout of the connector in the back so that I can make one.
I have been searching the net for weeks and it seems rather hopeless.

Probably a different application but I added a AUX-BOX made by PAC to the factory Delco headunit in my Blazer and I love it :)
They have some really awesome stuff!!!! http://www.pac-audio.com/

In order to run satallite radio off of an aux input of a deck that is not sat. radio ready, you have to get one of the plug and play units and connect it to the aux input instead of using the FM mod. This also means you'll have to deal with the a seperate display. Otherwise, buy an sat. radio ready deck and a tuner.

you have to buy the universal tuner for around $50, then buy the alpine adapter for around $50, then buy the antenna for around $50
thats much cheaper than when i bought it, i paid $300 for the alpine xm tuner(discontinued) and $150 for the antenna(thats how much they used to cost)

Just pull the deck out to see. It's better than waiting for someone here to find out. Then you'll know for yourself.

Has anyone found a remedy for this yet?
I have the same problem, I purchased a Satellite Radio andIdont want to use the FM Modulator. I have been looking all over for info regarding the AUX input, but I have been unable to locate anything.
I have a 2001 Grand Am, with the same one as the one pictured in the first entry of this thread.
Any information would be appreciated, thank you!

here, they have adapters for all monsoon systems, that plug into where a cd changer would plug into, and act as if they are a changer, etc. It tricks the headunit into thinking its a changer when in realilty all it is is a line input from whatever you want. you could hook up a ps2, dvd player, etc. check it out:

Does anyone know what type of connector (# of pins) that I would need to buy so I dont have to take the stereo out and count.

I would just yank it, it just requires yanking that trim piece off, then pulling a few bolts out and looking. Or email/call that website I posted and tell them what you have and what you want to do and have them suggest the best connector.
