on what year did the quad 4 have a balance shaft?

So I take it mine has a balance shaft, is hidden inside the engine somewhere where I cant tell its there.

IIRC it's in the block. Don't quote me on that though.

Easy way to distinguish between balance shaft vs non-balance shaft 2.3's...
Oil dip stick integrated with oil fill cap = no balance shaft
Oil dip stick separate from fill cap and is between engine and firewall = balance shaft

ok dipstick seperate from the oil fill cap then, yeah that should be mine then, oh i didnt know because mine had an engine swap and the motor is rebuilt, so this is all before i got it,
so this engine that says 2.3 on the valve cover could have been out of a different year, and when I took the timing chain cover off the timing was retarded a few degrees, so either theres a good reason or the person who built is an idiot. but when the person who owned the car put the engine back in he said it didnt feel like it had as much power as the original motor.
