View Full Version : Buzzing noise when accelerating

Hey Everyone
Hope everybody is doing well. I'm new to this message board and wanted to ask a technical question. I have a 2004 Grand AM GT. It has roughly 31,000 miles on it. About a month ago I noticed a buzzing sound that that sounded like it came from directly in front of the steering wheel or from behind the gas and brake pedals any time I accelerated. The noise kept increasing and then started happening everytime I accelerated or slowed down. (It has a Vrrrrrrrr sound if that makes any sense.) Then I started to feel slight vibrations from the floorboard underneath the drivers side. Drove fine at the time. A few later my ABS and ETS off lights came on as well as the Service System Soon light. I would stop the car, turn it off and it would reset. Then they would come back on again. This happens infrequently. Following this the change oil light came on. I am due for an oil change but not for another month. The change oil light stays on constantly. I took the car to Autozone to run a diagnostic, which resulted in no codes being shown but the tech said that it was a vacuum hose(?)that is blocked or needed to be replaced and that is where the sound is coming from. Presently, the ABS, ETS and SVS lights are not on, but the change oil light remains.

The text of your post states ou have an '04 Grand AM, unspecified engine.

Your profile indicates you have an '04 Grand PRIX with a 3.8.

Both are Pontiacs, but are quite different in both body and engine.
What vehicle are we talking about here??
* * *

SVS = Service VEHICLE Soon (on the GA), meaning there's prolly a faulty exterior light bulb (sometimes it's a fault with brakes).

I don't know what you mean by the "Service System Soon" light, there is none on a GA.
* * *

On a GA, a loose wire or connection from one of the WSS (Wheel Speed Sensors) on a front wheel hub will cause the antilock brake system to turn itself 'off'. Other things can also casue the ABS to turn 'off'.
Any time the ABS is 'off', then the Trac Control system (ETS) will also go 'off'.

The ABS on a GA has several little motors in its mechanism, which is mounted to the side of the mastercylinder. This is directly in front of the steering wheel, but under the hood.
And there should only be a slight 'buzzing' sound from it when you are actually in a skidding condition and the system is working to un-lock the brakes.

Hope this helps,
-Rick

I apologize for the confusion. It is a Grand AM instead of a Grand Prix. The Service Light that comes on is in the right display above the speedmometer on the dash. Upon thinking about it again I think it does say Service Vehicle Soon. That, the ABS light and ETS light have not come on for about a week now. Speaking about the buzzing noise, it does not produce the sound that the antilock brakes do when trying to unlock the brakes in a skid. This sound is produced constantly even when the brakes are not applied. I want to say it almost sounds like a piece of paper or tape caught and constantly being hit in a boxfan, only with a little lower pitch. Also the temperature gauge is beginning to read a little hot when the car is sitting and idling. It is not red lining but is higher than it is 95% of the time. I don't know if this has anything to do with it but I wanted to throw that out there as well. My gut feeling is that the sound is being produced somewhere from the front driver's side wheel or its wheel well. I was told it was a vacuum hose, I have also had someone say it was the ABS "wrapup" as well as faulty wheel bearings. My girlfriend drove the car and when she brought it back it was making the noise. She was visiting her family. They live at the end of a pretty bumpy road filled with potholes. I am thinking that may have something to do with it as well. Thanks for the help and anymore would be appreciated.

Does it seem directly related to engine RPM?

Could just be something rattling in the dashboard.

I also had an oil change about a week prior to the noise beginning. The put 10w-30 oil instead of the 5w-30 that is recommended. Would that cause a problem?

Seems almost related to it. Anyway, I just got a new wheel hub put on, and it still making the noise.
