View Full Version : ABS/TRAC STILL on after replacing wheel hubs
so i replaced my 2 front wheel hubs today however my abs and trac light are still on? why?
does it have to be reset with a scanner?
or should it of just gone off on its own?

If the problem that was causing the ABS to turn 'off' was a faulty WSS (Wheel Speed Sensor) and the problem was fixed by replacing the hub (with new WSS), then the system will re-activate itself (and turn the ABS light 'off') the very next time that the key in the ignition is turned to 'on'.
No resetting is necessary (or possible).
so i replaced my 2 front wheel hubs today however my abs and trac light are still on; why?Because something is still wrong.
Did you have the ABS light diagnosed, and the diagnosis told you the problem was the 2 front WSS, or did you just replace them *hoping* they were the cause of the light?
Though a faulty front WSS (or a loose wire or connection from one of them) is *usually* the cause of an ABS light being 'on', this is far from certain.
* A rear WSS may be faulty; or,
* Some other portion of the AB system, even the little computer module, might be at fault.
I would go to a reputable brake shop and have the ABS module scanned, and get an estimate from them of what is wrong and the cost to fix it.
Report back here with their determination, and mebbe we can help.
Good luck,

no actually my wheel bearings were shot so i just hoped when replacing them they would go off but no luck.
on monday i am going to go somewhere and get them to hook it up on a scanner and see whats up.
so had the card obd scanned and it stating from left wheel hub.

If you have any electrical contact cleaner hit that left hand hub sensor plug. Plug and unplug several times. Wait for it to dry some (wait 1/2 hour or more). If that does not fix it I would think a broken wire. A multi meter or test light should help you find a break. There are only two wires so trace them back as far as you can. (I think they terminate at the ABS module under your battery/washer fluid bottle). Good luck.
no chance in it being the Hydraulic Control Unit ??

I had a similar problem with my 03. Got the code read and there were multiple things, so they said to replace the hub. I changed the hubs and the lights went off. After about a month my ABS started engaging when slowing down, but not when it was necessary (dry, flat roads). Then my new hub failed (probably from ABS going off), so I had to replace again, but this time with a more expensive/better warranty one. Since I replaced the hub, the lights are on all the time or come on after my ABS engages while driving or slowing down when not necessary. Any chance this is a bad female end of the ABS plug? I'll try checking for a broken wire and get the code read again.

no chance in it being the Hydraulic Control Unit ??It could be the hydraulics (the 3 electronic relief solenoids, or their 3 respctive repressurization motors, all mounted on the side of the mastercylinder); these do fail on the GA.
Might also be the unit's little electronic brain, or the wiring to-from.
The point is, the ABS brain itself KNOWS what is wrong, and it's screaming at you (with the ABS light 'on') for the cance to tell you.
Take the car someplace that can read the code, rather than vex about what it might be or throw money at assorted parts.
I repeat my first conclusion:
"I would go to a reputable brake shop and have the ABS module scanned, and get an estimate from them of what is wrong and the cost to fix it."
If their cost is reasonable, pay it.
If you don't have the money at the time, tell them that and say you'll try to scrape it together and return.
Good luck,
-Rick

Might also be the hydraulics, or the electronic module, or other parts of the wiring.
The brain is trying to tell you what it thinks is wrong.
Go to a shop and have the code scanned, rather than throwing money at parts.
Replacing the hubs originally solved the problem, but there's no reason of logic to beleive your present problem lies there (other than 'falty connectio' is always the most common malady).
Mebbe one of the original 'multiple things' has raised its ugly head again, and futzing with the hubs or their wires is fruitless.
Good luck,

had it scanned and it is still showing up left front wheel hub.
does that rule out anything?

Yup, it rules out everything but the connection to the hub and the hub itself. :)

awesome at least i know now its not nothing expensive!
do the wiring ever go bad?

do the wiring ever go bad?
Yep. GM has repalcement harnesses. Common problem in the speed sensor harness that runs along the control arms. High resistance in the wiring give false signals to the EBCM.
any idea what they sell for?

Is the speed sensor the one that the ABS plug, from the hub, attaches to? Can you find this harness at the auto part store or only though dealer?
