Hi everybody,
First, I actually drive a '99 Malibu (sorry) and need some help. Since the GA and Malibu are both N-bodies, I was hoping you guys/ gals would be able to help. I want to get to my dome light wiring and need to remove the dome light. I got the plastic cover off, but cannot figure out how to pull the dome light housing down. It looks like it's held in with two little rivets and I'm afraid I'll crack the plastic by trying to pull them out. FWIW, my Malibu does not have a sunroof.

Thank you in advance for any help you're able to offer.

If it's the same as our GA's the 2 "rivets" are somewhat spring loaded. Push up on the plastic between them, move it to one side or the other then with a screw driver or the likes pry down on the piece close to the rivet. Once you have the "rivet clear of the opening release pressure on the middle.

I'll give it a try in a little bit. Thank you very much for the prompt response.

Well, I still wasn't able to get the dome light out. :(

Anyway, I was trying to get at the dome light's wiring to install a rearview mirror with map lights. I was able to tap into the dome light's wiring by the driver's side B-pillar so the project was still a success.

However, my map lights only work when the switch is turned on. I thought that they'd come on when the door is open, like the dome light does, but they don't. Is this how the map lights work in models that are OEM equipped?

Thanks again.

It depends on the vehicle. Some vehicles have dome light switched map lights, others don't. In my experience, its generally cars with a sunroof that has the door-switched map lights.
