Hey all, I'm about to purchase a compressor.

What is the year of your GA, and the engine?

The V5 airconditioning compressor is a 'variable displacement' type of compressor, which means it pumps less (and therefore uses less less engine power) when less cooling is required. An internal mechanism causes the pistons to shorten/lengthen their stroke, thus varying the amount of refrigerant they displace.
As compared to a a GM 'standard' HR6 compressor with 'fixed' displacement.

I don't think they are interchangeable: If one came with your car, then so did the controls to cause it to reduce the pumping (as opposed to just cycling on-off, as an HR6 does).

The '96 GA's use a V5, so do '92's and '02's, per the Checker parts website:

So the question is, if you need a replacement compressor (and, why?) why would you want/be thinking of anything BUT a V5??

Hope this helps,
-Rick

I have an '01 SE 2.4L, I have no idea what came on it. I changed out the original one with a used one trying to get out cheap (big mistake) and the bearing in this one is going out. So, I'm gonna do what I should have done in the first place and at least get a refurbished one. The v5 is obviously more expensive but it sounds like a better one. How would I know what was on it originally? The VIN?

Just year/model/engine/tranny, the same info you'ld give to the guy at the parts counter.

Go to the website of a local parts house, Checker or AutoZone or whomever, and find the listed part for your car.
Then shop around for best price, or used, or whatever.
Checker/Shucks/Kragen website is www.partsamerica.com, and here is their listing for YOUR '01 SE 4-cyl:

Good luck,

Thanks for that link. Another question: If the original compressor was not a
v5 and I go with one, are there any extra fittings or parts I need to add? Or do I just replace the compressor, drier, orifice etc. like normal?
