I know some of you out there have a 4th gen GA that has the infamous water leaks...
Post your flood pics here and lets see who has the worse leak.

I know this is a bit odd but hey I'm board

Man I wish I had a pic or two of my best friend's GA. He's got a '94 SE with every imaginable water leak known. Several trunk leaks (all around it basically), firewall leaks on both sides, rear footwell leak, and a window leak or two (I think). I think the frame of that car got tweaked before he got it though, because he took out the backseat to install some speakers and found shattered glass. And his front bumper has never lined up right - even before he smoked a deer at 75 with it.

I'll get some pics of this car tonight and start a thread on it. It's easily the shoddiest GA I know of.

Ok, so you don't like the tarp idea.....

Drill some holes in the floor where the water is deepest.

i have been wondering for the longest time why my car never has really had that new car smell since after a few months after i bought her new it turns out when i stuffe some carpet in the trunk near the quarter panels to stop the rattles from my sub a part of the carpet got wedged in the rubber vents in the trunk holding it open

needless to say my spare tire well ha about 6 inches of nasty mucky water in it and the spare cover was green and moldy on the bottom lol

Get a white tarp and proclaim yourself as the Ghost Rider.

You can take it one step further by setting up a towing hitch and putting a massive Pac Man on wheels behind you.

i had the EXACT same problem. i opened the lid a few days ago and the spare was frozen in the water... again.

Wow...im glad i didn't get a flat when it was below freezing here because i had about 3 inches of water in the well as well. when i discovered it, it wasn't frozen. Thats the only major water leak i've had.

OK, I decided to take some photos of the water in my car...sorry, the car is a little dirty at the moment, I just got done moving. It started in the usual way, water on the driver's side front, then passenger front, then it moves to the rear. The only different thing about it now is that the water is lingering on the passenger side. This isn't the worst water I have had in the car. The first time it happened the water went over 2 layers of floor mats.

Front Passenger - hard to tell, but the dark areas are soaked.

Rear Passenger - kinda obvious

http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g43/photogirl3886/water%20leak%202008/IMG_5247.jpg

Rear Driver - slightly wet on the lower left of the photo

http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g43/photogirl3886/water%20leak%202008/IMG_5250.jpg

Front Driver - kinda wet, but no standing water like it usually is

If it gets worse after the rain that we are getting today, I will take more photos and post them up.

Blond idea or not, I would drill a hole in the floor to let the water out. Put a bolt or screw in it when it is fully dry (July/August). Slice the carpet in a small area so the bit doesn't pull the thread when rotating. Make sure you are not drilling into something important.

My '96 Achieva had water like that. It was coming from the cowl under the wiper arms, bad body sealant. I don't know if it's the same with the '98 bodies.

Yeah, but I would rather fix the entire problem rather than a symptom of the problem. Usually the whole car looks like the rear passenger floor does. This has been going on for a few years and I am really getting sick of it!

That sucks! :( The worst my Beretta had was a small damp area after a pounding thunderstorm.

I bet under that carpet is mold city! Does the car smell?

photogirl12

Either it doesn't smell that bad, it is masked by the smell of my ex boyfriend's dog, or I just don't notice it. It is pretty much wet under the carpet all of the time.

Not yet...that is coming...right now I have the ever so fashionable newspaper floormats. We think it may be coming in through the firewall...this is why we haven't done anything about it yet...need warmer weather to do what we need to do!

Looks like you need a new water pump!

Seriously though, that's bad that it is collecting water in the interior. I wouldn't even be able to guess how that's coming in.

One mysterious leak I had one year is when seemingly all the power steering fluid vanished. No puddle, just gone! Filled it up and the following spring, did it again! Filled it up again and hasn't leaked since.

My last '95 leaked water in bad, too but I changed the weatherstrippping in the front doors and the problem went away, let alone the car was a lot quiter to ride in.

Did you ever think of that Darrin..The weatherstripping that is??

Shadow-D
03-24-2008, 09:20 PM
Yea, I've been thinking about that and the windshield gasket. Someone told me that could be where the water is coming in from rather than the firewall... :???:

I guess I will have to take the interior out and just go crazy with the garden hose to see where it is leaking.

tenspeed
03-24-2008, 10:01 PM
No need to remove the interior. Pull the carpet away from the firewall and see if the padding is wet. The water is either flowing behind the carpet or dripping on top of it.

True but the amount of water that is in there might be misleading, IE everything could be wet from seepage... Oh well I'll find it LOL

Thought I had better update this one! Darrin found the leaks (he stood outside of car with garden hose spraying certain areas, and I was inside of the car under the dash going "Yup, leaking" and "OK, stopped leaking"). There was a small crack under the cowl and there was a TSB for the foam that goes around the A/C intake. Crack under the cowl has been fixed. Foam for the A/C still has to get put in. Once we get all of the leaking to finally stop, then comes the replacing of the interior...for some reason I get the strange feeling that this isn't going to be fun.

wow thats horrible I'd hate to see how much rust is forming under the carpet

photogirl12
06-05-2008, 11:51 AM
Believe me, it ain't pretty...I only pulled back the carpet near the fire wall and there was a stain of rust where the water has been trickling. This is why I am dreading replacing the carpet. We haven't pulled the carpet the whole way out yet...SCARY!!

tenspeed
06-05-2008, 12:24 PM
Drill a small hole in the low spots and let the water drain out. You can stick a sheet metal screw in the hole to seal it when you get the leak fixed.

photogirl12
06-05-2008, 12:38 PM
At this point the water on the carpet is gone. Time will tell when it rains hard again if it leaks. We also discovered that my ex decided to put spray foam in under the cowl at the corners of the windshield...I have a feeling that this made it worse. :(

Hmm Ouchies. Well I know we have the same frame and doors, and on my white one I replaced the weatherstripping in the doors and it stopped leaking altogether... Just something to give a thought.

Mein_GT
06-06-2008, 11:23 PM
I would assume it may be different from everyone but where does the general leak occur for the front driver area? i get a little bit of a wet area on the carpet when its raining heavy, no puddle or anything just moist enough thats its annoying me and its only recent so I want to catch it before it really gets bad!

photogirl12
06-07-2008, 12:07 AM
My leak was under the cowl near the windshield...there was a crack in that area. The way that we found it was Darrin was outside the car with a garden hose, I was inside under the dash with the carpet pulled back enough to where I could see where the water was coming down. Mine had been leaking for so long that it was kinda easy to tell where the leak was...there was a dried rusty trail of water.

If these 2 repairs don't do the trick, we will try that. Unfortunately, we won't be able to tell unless we get a hard rain for a few days or after winter...that is the really bad thing about this leak...it only happens after the spring thaw.

I had two different leaks to fix. My front passager floor was wet after a hard rain. I did the fix in the following link and now it's fixed:
http://www.gaownersclub.com/forum/showthread.php?t=77184

The other leak was in the rear passager floor after good rain. What I found surprised me. Poor engineering on GM's part. The pastic sheet between the back side of the door panel and the door itself has to be sealed at the bottom of it or the water will run down to the interior. There are even drain holes right at the bottom of where the plastic was originally sealed. It's hard to visualize and I don't have pictures but you can do what did to find it. Take off the door panel then run water from a garden hose on the outside of the window. Watch where it goes. I used trim glue to stick the plastic back to the door. That wasn't the best to do it though.
