GM squashed Pontiacs plan to bring the Banshee to production. It was supposed to be a Mustang killer but GM knew it would kill Corvette sales too. The body design became the third generation Vette in 68. Pontiac kept the tail light design and put them in the Firebird.

Yep. The Banshee, like other GM concepts was killed because it was highly likely to step on the toes of GM's flagship car: The Corvette.

Alot of damn good car concepts were killed off simply because it would render the Corvette irrelevant. Hence why you do not see stock Pontiac Solstices coming off the line with LS7s in them... If they did, the Corvette's sales would drop considerably since the Solstice's light frame and body coupled with such a meaty engine makes it an instant Vette eater.

Anyways, most of the non-vette cars will not get the LS series that is being used in the Corvette at that time. There is always a lag time to make the Vette have the superior engine in the model year.
