My rotors look like they are rusted pretty badly, not sure if thats what it actually is though. Anybody know how to make them not look like this:

have them turned to take that lip off the edge and then use some POR (paint over rust) on the hub and that should work.

The thing is i think they're brand new, unless the shop turned them there and thats what the other side looks like. Before i took it to the shop to get a leak taken care of they did something with the brakes.

I painted mine (not the part the brakes make contact with) when I bought brand new ones, it does help a lot, you can also buy them with some sort of coating on them that prevents rust

Wear old clothes, take them off, wire brush the rust off, sand them and paint them. You can try brush on caliper paint or high temp. spray paint.

There's no other good way to prevent rust on the parts that the pads don't rub on.

now my front ones started to rust...they stick out way too much so i'll probably take the wheels off and scrub the damn things or something

Three out of four people told you to paint them.

Maybe you should paint them.

well ya, thats what i ment by scrub them and clean em up. When i paint them do i paint the part that the pad touches it? GregFarz's post makes it sound like you can only paint the other parts that dont get touched my the pad, but then the area where the pad does touch will be rusted. Maybe im reading it wrong. idk its late. :)

I've seen some that are carefully masked off and some that everything is spray painted. I would try to keep the paint of the braking surface but I wouldn't worry about a little getting on there. I used brush on black caliper paint on my front rotors and Krylon black on my rear drums.

The pads wipe the rust (and paint) off the braking surface during a stop or two. You'll notice rust after sitting over night after a storm or high humidity.

yeah, a little rust is inevitable. just the nature of the beast. but some paint would do wonders.

i dont know if it matters or not, but when i've seen rotor's turned before they take a wire brush in the end of a drill and run it at different angles on the rotor. without digging in the rotor. don't know if you could actually get too deep with the wire brush.... maybe a brake expert could chime in
