hey cooler.. i just saw that in the paper today over here in edmonton. Fortunatly for me.. i dont have this problem.. I have since learned not to trust fuel gage levels.. I trust my trip odometer. For me.. i always fill up at 400 km's per tank of gas. I dont trust my fule gage becasue i can go 200 km's and my gag is still reading at 3/4's of a tank. I dont know how far my car can go.. but no matter what.. i always fill up at 400 even if its city driving or highway.. it just keeps things safe that way

I have actually noticed that the gauge is accurate until it reaches half a tank. Then I don't think it really knows how much gas there is.
Sabre69...I know you said you were from the States but I don't think that matters. The only reason this is geared towards Ontario is because the news paper is Toronto's. I would still write to GM about the the problem so that they will see that it is not only in Canada.
I already wrote to them! Myself and my brother have already run out of gas because of this problem and I will be damned if I am going to $500 for a new sensor.

I would assume when ever you want to take it in to get fixed. :idunno:
Please note that gas guages, particularly GM's, are designed to read high at the top, and then go fast as the tank empties. In other words, the guage goes down slow from full, but once it goes past 1/2 it starts to go fast. I can get 400 kms on first 1/2 tank, and barely 200 on the second 1/2. This is by design. Car & Driver (I think) talked about this afew years ago.
This isn't the same as the problem being related here, where the guage shows 1/2 full but there is no gas in the tank.

thats stupid, i want to know how much gas i have, all the time
Apparently you are the rarity. According to GM studies, people want to think they have lots of gas left in the tank, when it is over 1/2, but below that, they want to think they will run out soon, so they will fill up before running out. Even though the guage says very low, you actually have a reasonable amount of gas left in the tank.
I have a 57 litre tank. When I am at the 1/2 full mark, if I fill it then it will take around 35 litres of gas or more. That means even though it shows I have 1/2 a tank remaining, I do not. If I don't fill up, the guage starts dropping quickly. It seems wierd, but GM says that's what their customers want.

I noticed the the way GM does gas readines on newer cars is a lot different than my old 80 malibu, as mentioned above, moves slower at the top of the tank.
and also as above, if you usually fill up after 400 KM, and you are going on 550 KM, and you tank still shows full, then GET SOME GAS! lol.. some people just don't monitor this stuff enough hence this big uproar about a little thing.
Let us know if anyone sees them doing a fix...

I don't see why this is still an issue. I thought GM issued a recall already two years ago on faulty gas gauges if using high sulphur gas. I had my 2000 Alero done already. Was the recall only for Western Canada?

They may have made a recall in your area but us in Ontario are still stuck fighting to get it fixed. The only recalls they have made so far for Ontario is on the late modle GM vehicles.
