View Full Version : Is a 2.4 Twin Cam-->to W41 build Possible?

After some research, I have some questions about the 2.4 vs the W41, and what would be the best way to use the W41 parts to improve the 2.4 safely.
First: Is it feasable on a not-astormical budget to swap a W41 motor into a vehicle built for the 2.4? I understand the tranny is gonna be the biggest issue, as well as rigging the ODB-II PCM to run an OBD-I motor .
Second: If the first action is impractical, what parts (cams, exhaust/intake manifolds, etc) from a W41 OR 2.3 HO can be added into a 2.4 motor without serious side effects?

Only thing that will directly bolt on is the IDI cover which has no gain other then appearence. The only advantage the W41 had over the HO was an extra 10hp from the cams and a better tune from the ECU. To pull off this swap you will need custom transmission mounts and I think the motor mounts might be a bit off as well. Also wiring will be the biggest headache so standalone would be your friend.
Also this does not even mention the extreme rarity of finding a W41 motor I was extremely lucky there are a lot of people that have never even seen one yet alone found one for sale

Not practical. Plus a W41 + automatic would be an awful combo.

If you want a motor that's as powerful as a W41, yeah you'll spend a lil bit of money.
2.3HO head will go on, there even is a "special" headgasket available from Cometic that'll help facilitate this. You'll have to mess w/ some of the coolant passages in the 2.3 head for a good and proper swap onto a 2.4L block, but it is very doable.
2.3HO exhaust cam tower and cam and lifters go on like normal
2.3HO intake cam gets modified so the 2.4L powersteering can interface w/ it like stock. 2.4L intake cam tower gets machined for 2.3L lifters.
you reuse the 2.4L timing chain housing and assembly and cam gears and guts etc....
you use hptuners to retune the vehicle and to turn off the code for the intake cam sensor.
2.3HO intake manifold goes on like it should, and so does the throttle body, same w/ the exhaust manifold. you fab up your own downpipe and exhaust and viola.. happy times.

Happy times indeed.
What im planning is to lightly mod the motor I have right now ( just a 75 shot N20, plus WAI and mebbe a tuned PCM ) , and buy a separate, lower mileage 2.4L motor and just build it as described above. Then, one day, plug and play......
Thanks for the info, but I have a fast question: what of the tranny? I can't very well connect a tired 175K+ mile slushbox to such a badass motor.Whats got to be changed to install a manual?
BTW: I know its gonna be expensive. The way I see it,Id rather spend $10,000 and make a 13 second car from the car I got, than blow $35,000+ on a factory car,and get one up on the insurance companies while im at it .....
to change over to a manual you find a donor manual car in the yard of a 99+ N-body and steal everything from there, and the ecu too.
you need clutch pedal, shifter assembly, the linkage, the tranny, the tranny mount, clutch master/slave, and take the ecu, plus this lil harness w/ a big fat button that goes underneath the clutch pedal so you can start the car.
if you want to be super cool... find out which cast pistons are lighter than the OEM pistons and swap those in... get some eagle rods in case you get nitrous happy...
just make sure to have it all at the very least balanced so you'll have a healthy motor that'll last.
also anti-friction coatings on the pistons will be a good idea too if you really want to pull out all the stops...
Just one problem......
N-bodies are too porky to go all-motor.

the w41 or HO cams will bolt to a 2.4 twin cam... you should really look into www.quad4forums.com... the biggest differance between a 2.3 HO and 2.3 W41 is cams and ECU.. it is even possible to swap a 2.3 head on a 2.4... the cam sensor isnt a huge issue it will run without it if you did the cam swap.. there is a ton of info on Q4F.. and a w41 isnt all that rare really... a complet unparted W41 car is.. however.. i got my 92 Olds Achieva SCX W41 car for $350.. with 140k miles.. needed a fuel pump.. so maybe its not all that rare.. just finding someone to come off one is rare... now i dont know anything about swapping a 2.3 motor into a 2.4 car.. but i do know a little about swapping a 2.4 motor into a 2.3 car.. and ud have to change wiring harness.. ECU exhaust down pipe and mod the k frame for the dog bone and use a newer motor mount on the right side.... so backwords 2.3 in a 2.4 car shouldnt be that bad.. really join us on www.quad4forums.com.. we have tons of info there on the 2.3 and 2.4 motors..

it's not worth the effort to swap a 2.3 into a 2.4 powered car. Also if anybody is doing an all motor car in an N-body is out of their mind, as the gains from going all motor on such a tubby platform is not worth it at all, IMO.
yes, you can run 2.3 cams in a 2.4 with no problem, sort of. you will throw the cam sensor code as you briefly touched. Unless if someone has HPTuners that code will stay on and in some states they won't pass inspection.
To run 2.3L cams properly WILL cost some money and time.
