Hello, It has been awhile since I have visited this site, no big trouble till now. I had my grand am towed to the shop yesterday. It wouldn't start. Cranked but wouldn't turn over. They said the battery was low and wouldn't recharge and replaced that. They said there was not enough power getting to the oil sending unit or fuel pump. You can hear the fuel pump kick on but they said said it just didn't have enough pressure. They said they were sure it was the Pass Key system and it needed to be replaced. I did research on here about that and felt they were probably right. Then... a couple hours later they called me back to say they think they are wrong about the pass key system and are sure that it is the fuel pump. I just wanted to get some further advise from those that may know. I have never replaced the fuel pump in the past. I did have an incident during cold/moist weather in January when it stopped running going down the highway.. Heet fixed that problem. My car has been pretty dependable and has 143,000 miles on it. Thank You for any comments or suggestions

first off this should be in problems and solutions but whatever. as for the problem, if it were passlock the car wouldnt ever crank. it wouldnt do a damn thing, just sit there and be retarded. I would have to guess either bad fuel pressure regulator or bad fuel pump.

Actually in 2000 it will crank. Trust me, I know. Was the "security" light on? Passlock will shut off the fuel pump (I think that's what makes it not start). Fuel pump replacement is pretty expensive. Good luck.

is it different in the newer ones. i thought it had something to do with locking down the computer. Oh well. yea fuel pumps are a PITA though.

I have got a 1999 3400 grand am, The problem Im having is the c ar cranks but will not start. It will acts as if it tries but doesnt come through. It all started when Ii brought ot home, the car was running good. It has 152000 miles and I thought I would tune it up and check it out. I replaced the spark plugs with Bosch plugs and it started fine until a couple days later I tried starting it and it started with little knocking sound and sputtering and as soon as I accelerated the engine lost power and died. Since then I have replaced the plugs with AC Delco plugs gapped at .060, new plug wires, Fuel filter, fuel pump, cleaned throttle valve, checked voltage ofcrankshaft pickup ,it was 215 mv ( the haynes book says a min. of 200mv),checked resistance of coils and all ok,change upper intake manifold gasket because I had found a manifold bolt loose and was afraid that it could be a vacuum leak. I took my ignition module to be checked and found it was shorted ans replaced it, but it didnt cure the problem. Good Luck
I will be interested what you find out.
