i was at circuit city today and i noticed they had remote starting kits for about 50 bucks and then they had kits up in the 400 dollar range, what is the difference in that they could charge a couple hundred bucks extra? this is in U.S money. also what do you think the best remote start kit is, for price and quality. thanks

Hmm, to tell you the truth i think it don't matter what brand or what 1 you get. cause when i bought my car it had one on it. and i would say go with 1 about $40.00 if you gona get 1. I for 1 like mine cause i use it alot in winter.

my guess would be that the $400 has a better range and probably an alarm and keyless entry.

the 50 dollar one was just the remote start itself and if you're going to get an aftermarket remote start then you want to get an alarm...i have an audiovox/viper remote start alarm...i love it man...i get so many mad props with it. If i were you though i would get a viper.

I got mine at Circuit City, but I had i put on there too...final cost was $200 for everything. I have the remote that starts the car and also locks and unlocks the doors, and my factory remote. I dont use remote start in the summer, so I just have it on a seperate key ring hung up in the house for now. It sure is a great thing in the winter though!!

I used to be an installer at a local shop for things like this. The main unit we always installed was Prestige when it came to remote starters. It was a remote starter/keyless entry unit. Had a 1,500 ft range and all that other good stuff and only cost $50. Now on a newer grand am, like 97-98+ you're going to spend a decent amount getting it installed because we have passlock II anti-theft security. I say since you're already going to spend $150-200 for the unit and install might as well spend another 50-100 and get an alarm/remote starter and have it all in one nice package. Goodluck!

well here is what i did. i went ahead and bought the remote starter for 50 buck it was the DIY Rattler i think it has keyless entry on it. well i am going to install it myself, and i found out that to get passed the passlock I that is on my car i need an immoblizer number 555L i think that is an additional 30 bucks to get, i don't know if circuit city sells one so i might have to go to a car security store and get one. it doesn't seem to be too difficult to install, i have basic soldering skills and i am sure i won't mess up my car... well i will do it this weekend and i will let you guys know how it goes. thanks for all the replys

I bought one thinking I could install it, and to tell you the truth, it's worth the money to get it professionally installed unless you really know what you are doing, I had no clue what I was doing and I just couldn't figure it out.

A website that will help (wiring diagrams and such): www.the12volt.com

Everything is free and it's good information. Good luck, if you do figure it out, maybe you could post some detailed step by step instructions for those people like me :D

All you need to bypass Passlock II is a multimeter and some resistors that you can pick up at radioshack. It's really really really really simple. 1st time I did it was on an alero and I thought it was gunna be tough but someone showed me how and I laughed at it's simplicity. Passlock is really just a joke when it comes to theft deterance, you can actually just cut it out to do a remote starter but by using resistors it keeps it functional when not remote starting. Goodluck

bypassing the passlock may be easy but the rest of the installation looks difficult if you haven't done it before. i watched a friend of mine install his and he had half the dash tore out it looked like. i have a Clifford AvantGuard4 and had it professionaly installed and love it. why would someone only use it in winter? i use mine in the summer too. its the same concept really. you use it in the winter to warm up, so use it in the summer to cool off
