Tools needed:
socket set
T 47 bit
torx bits
phillips screwdriver
straight tip screwdrivers (2 needed-one large to pry/one small to remove wiring clips)
pliers
Steps:
1. Remove rear view mirror--
Loosen set screw at windshield with torx bit
Unplug wire harness from back of mirror (cars with factory sunroofs
should have a mirror with 2 map lights)
2. Remove sun visors--
Remove 3 phillips screws on each visor (visor will fall in your lap)
3. Remove sunroof switch--
Gently pry out with large straight screwdriver (clips are at the front
and back of switch. Unplug switch.
4. Remove rear interior lights--
Gently pry off clear lense.
Gently pry out chrome reflector.
There are 2 phillips screws hidden under the chrome reflector.
5. Remove HMSL (High Mounted Stop Light/3rd brake light) cover--
Gently pull this down/off.
6. Remove top seatbelt mounts (T 47 torx)
7. Remove interior trim/top of door--
Front section (beside windshield) comes out at a 45* angle
8. Remove interior trim at bottom of door--
There are 4 phillips screws on the bottom of the trim.
On the passenger side, there are 2 screws on the section going up to
the dash. (The top screw is kind of hidden.)
On the drivers side, there is only one screw on the section going up to
the dash, just below the hood release.
9. Pull out rear interior trim (around rear side windows)--
You don't have to remove this. Actually, you can probably skip this
step. It just seemed easier to remove the headliner this way.
10. GENTLY pull down on headliner to release it. It's glued in places and it's
flimsy so be very careful!
11. Carefully remove headliner from trim around sunroof opening. If you pull
out on the trim as you pull down on the headliner it'll work.
12. Drink cold beverage of your choice.
13. Push rear interior lights through holes in headliner and remove headliner
from car.
14. There are 4 drain tubes (one in each corner). The front ones just pull
off. The rear ones have spring loaded clamps. Squeeze with pliers.
15. Unplug wiring harness over drivers door.
16. Remove sunroof switch holder (above windshield). This isn't necessary
but it seemed to help as it lets you push the wiring harness out of
the way as you're working. There are two screws. You might have
to slide it off of the metal tabs.
17. There are 6 bolts and 2 plastic clips holding the sunroof assy in place.
One bolt in each of the corners and one bolt on each side. I don't
think the plastic clips make any difference except to make it easier
for one person to install (i.e. on the assy line).
18. Drop the sunroof assy down and remove it from the car!!
Reinstallation is the opposite of removal.
NOTES:
-The trim around the door installs on the outside of the trim around the rear window.
-Trim around door covers part of the weatherstripping.
-When you reinstall the headliner around the sunroof opening, it's easier if you run a piece of string/fishing line around the trim, then use that to pull the trim around the opening in the headliner.
-Before you reinstall the headliner, try the sunroof motor. If the sunroof doesn't slide all the way back, you can remove the motor from the frame (3 torx bolts), manually slide the sunroof open, then reinstall the motor. I had to do this.
-A cordless drill is handy as there are lots of screws that have probably not been removed in 10 years.
Total time (for the mechanically challenged): about 4 hours. (About half that if you know what you're doing. :)
