Despite a slightly rocky start, the aftermarket in Japan has fully embraced the R35 Nissan GT-R. We've already reported on the trials and tribulations (http://www.autoblog.com/2008/02/07/nissan-gt-r-cant-take-aftermarket-wheels-unapproved-race-track/) owners have faced when trying to throw on some new hoops or attempting to get past the Nissan-imposed 111-mph speed limiter, but as we suspected, both issues have been resolved post haste by the auto-obsessives across the Pacific.

However, the VAC unit isn't cheap at 120,000 yen (around $1,200 US).

Eh... $1,200 is nothing to someone who has the money for a GT-R.

Heres what I would do if I ran Nissan:

Instead of letting ebay and everyone else make mad money on custom mods, Id have NISMO sell a standalone ECU, and a line of 'factory certified' parts like rims,tail-lights, etc.

The way I see it,the whole 'lockdown' approach Nissan is taking with the GTR is both counter-productive and unprofitable. So why do it?

Liability reasons maybe?

doubt it. look at the C6 Z06. i've never driven either one, but i would put money on the GTR being easier to drive hard. AWD plus tons of computer interference vs. high hp RWD car.

or even the dodge viper. that thing is about as ruthless as they come in terms of driving it hard. definitely a driver's car lol
