i am trying to find out how to change the timing gears on a 2.5L 1988 grand am. i will also need to know how to align the gears once they are changed. thanks for any help. Tim

Just to let those who might need to change gears or a timing chain you can do it with the engine in the car. if you need any help in changing a timing chain or gear set just send me a message and i will fill you in. Total time was about six hours. cost was around $75.00. Ponitac quoted 900.00 if all went well. that's alot of money to save and buy new parts with.

Oops... a little late now, but was going to suggest a shop manual for timing alignment procedure. Doing it yourself always beats dealer shop prices.

I see you're local... I assume you got the quote from another GM dealer - I found out Triboro Pontiac is closed. That had me really angry in January when they were 1 of 3 dealers in the US that had the water pump studs I needed in stock, but couldn't sell them to me. The owner was in... stopped the sale cause they no longer have a license to charge sales tax or something. :no:
