Check your mounts - worn/torn mounts can make transmission engagement noticeable.

im having this problem with my '02 GAGT right now. Tranny shop is telling me its a torque converter clutch selonoid. Thats what the code is reading anyway

I had the same problem when I would put the car in drive, I'd hear this clunck. Turns out that it's the rubber portion of both the transmission mounts that have broken down and the clunking noise is the engine learching forward, because the transmission isn't anchored properly anymore. Not good! Have your mechanics take a peak in the engine compartment when you put the car in drive and if it's that same problem, they'll see with their own eyes it's the transmission mounts.

TCC problems often have a 'jolt' involved, but as you indicate they also throw a CEL/SES light and a code.
Any GA with 60k+ miles is a candidate for broken motor mounts (there are 3).
The top of the engine shouldn't move fore-and-aft more than about 3/4" each (total about 1.5") when shifted from 'N' into gear (either D or R on an auto; or into 1st or R with *lightly* slipping clutch in a manual).
Excess movement results from the mount moving through the broken rubber bushing.
