I was at my local Pep Boys this morning, getting stuff to fix my truck, and I saw the end cap with the scanners. They have one that scans both engine and brake codes, for $30. Has anyone seen that one? Know if it is any good/worth the $30? I figured that would be better than paying $90 for a code scan every time I need one. Plus I think it works on my truck too.

Why are you paying that much? Did you take it to the dealer? Pepboys/Autozone/Advanced/Partsource should be doing it for free. ;)

Not sure exactly what you referring to, got a link?

$30 is a good price for an OBD2 code reader. The cheapest one I've ever seen was at Harbor Freight for $40. Like Trudgn said though, most of the national auto parts chains will either scan your codes for free, or let you borrow the code scanner for free (with driver's license as collateral sometimes).

But AutoZone/etc. generally won't scan ABS codes.

Chris, as stated, do you have a link to the brand/model of $30 scanner that also does brakes?
Frankly, that is a KILLER deal.

What I've noticed with *most* cheap scanners (<$100) is that they only report Pxxxx numbers, then you must look-up the number in a booklet of codes.
Fine for 'generic' P0xxx codes, and for the P1xxx codes of Ford, GM, Dodge, Toyota, and Honda that are listed;
But you're SOL for your buddy's nissan or other unlisted vehicle.
I would frankly be wary of the accuracy of the code booklet for ABS, if this scanner uses one instead of displaying actual codes along with the Pxxxx number.

My Pep Boys charges $89, Midas charges $89, Just Brakes charges $45. I didn't bother calling Auto Zone or Advanced Auto.

The scanner has a selector switch on the bottom- a slide switch- to choose ABS or computer. It says on the package that is has the codes and what they are. You will have to see if your local Pep Boys has it. Pep Boys web site doesn't have a parts look up like Auto Zone does. I remember it was made by Sun something or another.

One of the mechanics at work has one. bought it from www.myscantool.com. I've heard rumblings they are having customer service issues...
Nice thing is that if you don't like their software there are other free programs available that will work.

I didn't bother calling Auto Zone or Advanced Auto.Places that do WORK always charge (except Aamco trannies is runnng a nationwide campaign for FREE plug-and-scan on all CEL/SES lights, since often it's a tranny code and they want your business, even if it's just for a $100 flush-n-fill).

Places that sell PARTS hook up their little handheld scanner for free, and give you the codes (In USA; I understand not so at Canadian Tire and other parts places in the great white north).
The shop wants to sell you the indicated part, then and there, since that's how they make their money.

Do NOT buy the indicated part(s)!!
Codes do not indicate 'faulty parts'; they indicate faults with part CIRCUITS.
Often, it's not the part that's faulty, but rather the wiring or a connector, or another part altogether.
Report back here with the exact P0xxx or P1xxx code, and we'll help with further diagnosis.

I went back and looked at the scanner again. It is OBD1, not 2. Waste of money, since OBD1 you can do the paper clip trick.
