Normally, no. It is the friction on the clutch plates inside the tranny that are becoming worn, and are causing the slip. As mentioned by Rocket, the Lucas stuff may help.
Far as if it will get worse if you keep driving, yes, but no one in the world can tell you when it will stop driving, so drive her till she dies, just try not to beat on her as much.
I assume its an Auto, when was the last time the tranny fluid was changed? How many miles are on the vehicle?

I had the same problem with my 03 GA SE @ 189,000 kms. Tranny would slip in fourth, then third, then it finally died last Friday over the course of a few weeks of it starting. Getting a new tranny put in today :-(
Good Luck...
what did it cost u to have a tranny put in?

$2,000-3,000 usually, make sure you get a warranty, and as far as the slipping problem, it didnt help, so the best thing you can do probably is just drive her till she dies.

Yep drive her till she dies and strands you, LOL. That's what happened to me on the way home from work. New tranny with 3 yr, 80,000 kms warranty from my local Pontiac dealership cost me just over $3500.00 installed.

im not really worried about it leaving me on the side of the road because you kind of expect that from a Grand Am. JUNK.
