Ok, well my sister was driving my car and she decided the road wasn't a fun enough place to drive. Apparently the field on the other side of the ditch looked like a better place the drive :roll2: Anywho, the A/C lines were completely obliterated. I got a new serpentine belt that bypasses the A/C Compressor but the problem is where the lines go into the firewall into ?heater core? I'm not really sure. I haven't really worked on A/C before except to get the Compressor out of the way to do something else.

What I was wondering was, what is the thing in the firewall, and can I just remove the hoses, or put a cover over it or something? Thanks for any suggestions or solutions

The firewall box contains the fan, heater core, and evaporator core.
It's called the Fan Box or sometimes the air box.

The thing with the refrigerant tubes is the Evaporator Core.
It looks very much like a heater core with tubes and fins, and identical to the evaporator just behind the faceplate of a window air conditioner (though smaller).
It carries cold refrigerant through it under pressure.
All your refrigerant was dispersed into the field.

Cut those projecting tubes wherever you want to, and abandon the evaporator in place in fan box.
Seal the cut ends with ducttape for no other reason than not to scratch yourself when working in the area in the future.

That's it, period.

You already took care of the hard part - the serpentine belt bypass. The rest can be removed now. Just leave the Evap core inside the car, and cut the lines to it as Rick mentioned.

Oh, and I think someday you should borrow your sister's car.

He lives in BUFFALO.
Sis knew he would never need that damn A/C.

:D :D

Actually, kusumuck, the AC is used in winter during the 'windshield Defrost' to dehumidify the air and prevent icing-up of the inside of the glass.
So you may encounter some of this.

Buffalo gets pretty hot in the summer. I'd die there without A/C.

I'd die here in the summer without it. It's not the heat, it's the humidity!

yeah, we have decently high heat with TONS of humidity. it's nothing for us to be running 98/99/100% humidity during the summer and be sitting mid 90s at the same time.

makes me depressed thinking about it

Thanks a lot guys. I'm just going to chop the lines and tape them off. It can get pretty hot here during the summer but all of my windows work so I guess I will just have to deal. As for getting my sister pay for it, it would be easier to squeeze money out of a rock and then shove the rock up my *ss. :moon: Thanks for the info.

if it's nice out i prefer to roll with the windows down. but when it starts getting warm i'll roll 'em up and crank the a/c up on high :D

would insurance cover it?

Where can I get a ribbed pulley for the tensioner? The way that I routed the new belt has the ribs of the belt on a flat tensioner pulley and the belt is leaving residue on the pulley. I just want to take off the pulley and replace it with a grooved one. Thanks

Couldn't you just leave the A/C compressor in and remove the clutch? Thats what I did with my olds and it worked great.

The bearings in the compressor were shot anyway. It was squeaking, so that is why I decided to take it out. But now because I routed the belt a different way I have a ribbed belt on a flat pulley and it is either wearing the belt or the pulley or both. Either way, I need to replace that pulley but I don't know where to get one that will fit.

I've never seen the A/C removal setup for the GA's so I am assuming that the pulley you are talking about is a different diameter than the tensioner pulley (tensioner has the ribs) already on the GA.
If you know the diameter you need for the pulley, I would pick up two coffee's, go to your local parts store, tell the guy at the counter that you need to find a GM pulley and its going to take a while, and then pass him the coffee.

good luck
