Okay, I'm an audio noob like whoa, but I need to know...what EXACTLY does "protect" mean? I'm guessing overheat...my amp only does it when it's been going for a while.

Way of saying , i am on way too long and can't handle the load, either replace me or get a new fuse for me. WAY too much use.
Also could indicate bad wiring or crossed connetions.

Check wires , and fuses and connections.

Yes, usually when an amp goes into protect mode its because it has overheated and shut itself down before it melted the insides out :) Causes of this over heating range from bad wiring, to low an ohm load from the speaker, clipping from having gain/bass boost turned up to high, speaker terminals shorting out, playing at high volumes for too long and the amp not getting enuff air to cool itself down, or just from the amp sitting in direct sunlight beating in through the back window.
