I'm selling one of my Jeeps Saturday, the Cherokee. I'm looking to get into a car and was looking at the Regal GS until I remembered the rental Grand Am GT car I had years back. I really enjoyed driving it.

Is there a classified section here? I've found many with around 115k or so in my 4.5k price range. I'm looking for a 2 door, preferably white or black. Anything specific to look out for? Are these trannies generally reliable? Thanks

The automatics in the 99+ cars (4T45E) are not necessarily unreliable, but they can't take much more power than the 3400 puts out; if you are one for performance mods you will have a limit.

The 4T60E in the 92-98 3100s and Quad 4s are great. I have known one to fail out of dozens, but I attribute that more to the fact that my sister abused the shit out of it.

If you are looking at one with a 3 speed automatic, I can't give them praise or shoot them down. I have a J-body with a 3 speed auto; it made it to 198k miles before the reverse clutch called it quits. It still goes forward just fine, but parking is selective.

There are basically two 5-speed manuals offered, but none with the 99+ V6 models. There is the Isuzu and the Muncie-Getrag. Both are solid transmissions, but anyone who pushes more power than stock tends to prefer the Getrag. Several people still get a lot of power through the Isuzu without much conflict though.

Not sure how familiar you are with GM vehicles, but the 3100 and 3400 V6 engines have a gaping fault in the lower intake manifold gasket. Most older vehicles will have already have it changed at least once, but if you happen to get one that hasn't been changed out with the revised gasket you are in for a weekend repair or a big bill at a shop.

The 92-98 models are known for leaks into the interior (especially around this time of the year). Definitely feel for wetness on the floorboards.

At your budget, you're definitely looking at a 2003 or newer, maybe a few years older for particularly clean cars. I paid $1750 for a 1994 in 2006 and didn't feel like I overpaid a penny.

I've been eying several 99+ GT's.

I've owned many GM cars (3 Seville STS and a Buick Century) and all the trannies were flawless into the 150k range when I switched vehicles. Thanks.
