Who wants it real bad?

Are you man enough for GM's recreation of a modern muscle car? Maybe we can understand why they are going to build this car in the first place. Let's take a look at what the home office calls their "Target Market". There are two groups that might be potential buyers: High Income Performance Enthusiasts and Young Affluent Males.

First we'll start with the High Income Performance Enthusiasts. According to GM consumer research available on the web, the age of a typical male High Income Performance Enthusiast, abbreviated H.I.P.E. is around 45. Combined household income near $120,000. These are younger-minded drivers for whom cars are a passion and a high-priority indulgence. They have the discretionary income to purchase finer things, and will expect a level of refinement in the products they purchase. They love speed, handling and the style of high performance cars, and tend to own a Sport car or an Entry Luxury Coupe. A H.I.P.E. remembers the GTO name from the past, and might have positive associations with its imagery. This buyer will demand more than just legendary "straight-line" performance.

Then there is the Young Affluent Males target market. The median age of this buyer is 30, with a secondary market between 25 to 30 years old. Combined household income is $70,000. A mere 40% of Y.A.M.S are married. As far as education, 75% of these guys are already college graduates. These are successful, highly motivated recent college graduates, who follow the latest trends, especially in technology gadgets, clothing and pop-culture. They make new stuff popular and widely desirable, give it a "must have" status not only among its age group peers but also among younger and older generations. When it comes to cars, Y.A.M.S value outstanding performance and attractive design, expecting a high level of refinement and attention to detail. They prefer vehicles that have a "badge" value, but might be willing to overlook it in favor of a truly cool product.

How about competition from other vehicle makes? The other "new car" competition, as perceived by GM: Acura CL 3.2, BMW 3 Series, Infiniti G35, Chrysler Crossfire, Mazda RX8, Nissan 350Z, Ford Mustang GT Premium/Cobra, Dodge Charger.
Bringing back the Legend

What is GM's marketing position on this yet-to-be-released car? To quote their own literature...
GTO is the premium performance coupe delivering legendary performance reborn for the 21st century, combining outstanding power, great handling and clean design to embody the ultimate expression of modern driving excitement.

They are obviously trying to capitalize on the nameplate's legendary heritage. Maybe they can reignite the legend by creating a modern day GTO. After all, they're building a V-8 powered rear wheel drive premium coupe. If the design holds up to consumer scrutiny, buyers just may discover a blend of relentless power combined with impressive ride and handling. Can Pontiac stir the passion of the true driving enthusiast?
Availability

Production of the 2004 Pontiac GTO is scheduled to begin in September 2003 at Holden’s Elizabeth, Australia plant. Up to 18,000 GTOs will be produced annually. Some sources say that the car will not be available in the USA until December 2003 or January of 2004.

It's amazing to me that with all the tout about this new "muscle" car, no one has talked about a 1/4 mile time, or even a 0-60. Isn't that what's important?

I thought the very same thing, but then I found an article that said 0-60 is 5.8 sec and 1/4 mi is 14.02 sec @105 mph. Top speed is said to be 160mph. I'll try and find that article again.

Once people get their hands on them to test them you'll see more times listed.
Right now they can only give a educated guess based on torque/hp, weight, and gearing.

Even though I'm one of the two target groups listed there are 2 reasons I won't be getting one, with a distant third.

1. Won't be sold in Canada.
2. Inflated price tag. Not enough bang for the buck compared to others in same category.

3. I just love my GA :D

Nice car I would like one, but I am not sure if I am happy with it only running 14.02 I was expecting a 13 sec car.

You guys do know that the GTP runs 15 flat or even a little into the 14 zone stock? That 1 sec improvement into the GTO seems mediocre don't you think? lets see you have on one side Pontiac's #1 sports Car (GTO) and on the other their #1 family car (grand prix) running in the same class. Hmmmmmmm not impressive enough for me. oh and sorry to all GTP enthusiasts. that was not a chop on you with the family car thing just tryinmg to make a point.:) :agree:

On the other hand it is a beautiful car, and it has the nicest in interior i think I have ever seen. So as for styling the car rocks, just wish it had a turbo.

OK - check it out - I found the article I was looking for:

Pontiac -

Under the hood of the 2004 GTO is a specially tuned LS1 5.7-liter V-8 aluminum-block engine at 350 horsepower @ 5200 rpm, 365 lbs.-ft. of torque at 4000 rpm with an appropriately tuned Pontiac exhaust note. While sharing the same basic engine configuration with the base-level Chevrolet Corvette, the LS1 engine in the GTO has been modified with a high-lift camshaft and increased airflow induction to create greaterhorsepower and low-end torque than the Holden Monaro to address the needs of U.S. drivers.

All that power is mated to either an electronically controlled Hydra-Matic 4L60-E four-speed automatic transmission or the six-speed, close ratio manual transmission available on the Corvette ZO6. Both transmissions feature the same low-geared 3.46 final drive axle ratio in a rear-wheel-drive configuration to maximize off-the-line performance, a limited slip differential, and a three-channel traction control system designed to help enhance vehicle control.

Although performance testing on the vehicle has not been completed, the production model GTO is expected have a zero-to-60 acceleration time of less than 5.5 seconds and run the quarter-mile in approximately 14 seconds at a speed of 105 mph. The top speed of the vehicle is estimated to be about 160 mph.

Stopping power is supplied by power-assisted four-wheel ventilated disc brakes with a standard four-channel anti-lock braking system.

Well, the GTP is already pushing near it's theoretical limits. The GTO has a lot more aftermarket (due to the LS1) to it than the GTP would.

Strap a charger on that LS1 and watch it fly...
