Just wondering how many people have this kit (I doubt it's many given I did a search and got three hits, lol). Will it fit under stock 16" GT wheels?
Frankly I'm just fed up with the brakes on this car... After nearly 11 years owning the car it's getting a bit annoying, LOL.
I mean they aren't bad but it's just that the pads wear out pretty darn quick (I don't think I've ever had any more than 2.5 years on a set though sometimes a change has been prompted by a warped rotor). And I'm really light on the brakes, it's just that IMO the braking system for this car is for a car nearly 10 years older than it is and for one that's not as heavy (like the J-body).
I'm also fed up with smaller things like painting calipers and rotors like every season from the paint wearing/coming off, treating the bushings which seem to get dirty quickly and the silicone goes away just as quick, lubricating the sliders which are just as bad, etc. Gone through maybe 5 sets of rotors in the car's life including now 2 sets of PowerStops. I'm actually at the point where I have separate rotors and pads for winter and summer (but that still doesn't stop the calipers from enduring the winter elements).
My current summer rotors (PowerStops) are warped too, so I was going to go to PowerSlot cryo-treated instead this summer, plus get G2 epoxy-type caliper paint. But that will be around $200 in rotors plus the cost of the paint and the time to do it all [over again]... And then I'm seeing the Wilwood set is at a relatively low price (less than $850 including the Wilwood lines) and all that's needed is the knuckles cut for installation (sliders have to come off for the kit to go on).
To be honest, I'd rather upgrade the rear brakes from the craptastic drums but at $1200 for the Baer rear set, I'm just not feeling like I want to spend that much; and I certainly don't have the time to find already hard-to-find Neon parts.
I'm buying a new car this year (the Grand Am isn't going anywhere though) so the car probably won't see winter again meaning I guess I don't have to worry about whether the brakes will fit under the 16" wheels; but then I won't have to worry about having two sets of brakes either.
Seems like the Wilwood set would let me forget about all the front brake maintenance for a long time; then again it's gonna be nearly $1k on a car I'm probably not going to drive that much after this year.
Any opinions? :???:
