I was told by a mechanic who has been a diesel mechanic for 20 years to switch toDexcool. When I took my 94GA Quad4 SOHC to the shop they told me definetly not. You cannot switch from green antifreeze to orange antifreeze because of the chemical reaction . What's the story here?

you would need to do a complete coolant flush to make sure you got it all out. But do your research on dexcool it really causes nothing but problems building up in all the areas it flows over time.

yea if I had green coolant in my car I would never go to dexcool, prob not even yellow

green coolant, propylene glycol(I blieve thats it) and dexcool, ethylene glycol, similar but one (propylene) having 3 carbons and the other, ethylene, having two carbons

generally many organic solvents can mix with each other, however with these two being mix, the protonation causes them not to be misible with one another and causes some parts to separate causing sludge

they can be mixed but with very small amts of one with large amts of the other

Personally I wouldn't go to dexcool if you already have the green stuff. For one, DEX is alot more expensive. Also, your engine was not designed to use DEX. DEX is no more or less effective at cooling your engine than the old school green stuff is. The only real reason why GM uses it is for extended maintence intervals.

DEX-Cool and regular green stuff are both ethylene glycol. Different additives.

Stick to using the green in your 2.3.

yeah. avoid the dexcool like the plague lol.

i've changed my 99 grand am from the dexcool to the universal stuff...seems alot of places around here don't carry the old fashioned green stuff
