View Full Version : Exhaust tip painting?

From searching GAOC I've noticed that I have a fairly common problem - one of the four exhaust tips are completely rusted on my GAGT; the others are slightly better after a steel wool treatment.

Is it possible to paint the exposed part of the exhaust? Other non-GA sites have mentioned barbeque grill spraypaint (I wouldn't mind flat black). But I'm not sure how the "stainless" steel of the Grand Am would handle it.

I'm trying to avoid getting ricey by buying tips to cover the damage. Any suggestions appreciated.

High heat engine paint should work

mine were almost completely rusted on the bottom area of the tips.

im not sure of the gratitude of the rusting for you but sanding from 80 grit, then 120, then 220, then 320, then 400, then a wetsand with 600 grit got me pretty far. then polish with mothers turtlewax.

it will work believe in urself

I must have painted my tips 3 times by now. Sooner or later, (3-4 moths tops) they get dirty and the paint starts flaking away, even with high temp paint. (tried that)

Just paint them black and leave them be.

Even stainless will start to rust after a while. My friend had a Flowmaster catback on his Cavalier with a stainless tip and it started to get little spots on it after about 6 months, but I'm sure it would never get as bad as the regular stock tips can get, so I don't think you can avoid it completely. However, I'm very interested in hearing what others have to say about this as I have the same problem.

I went with the high temp flat black spray paint approach. Thanks again everyone.
