alright, I just got my car and the drivers side 6x9 is blown, or possibly the bracket might just be loose, but I'm pretty sure its a blown speaker. I have been searching and reading up on the Monsoon system complications with aftermarket speakers. Would it just be easier to get on ebay and buy a new OEM 6x9 that came in the GA's? if so, is there a difference between the monsoon 6x9's that came in the 99-00 cars and the 01+ cars?
also was wondering if the factory amp would be bypassed if i put in an aftermarket HU, or if it would possibly sound better with the stock deck?
thanks

bdub 02,
I had the exact problem with mu 02 GA.(I don't have a monsoon)I found it easier to order a factory speaker from GM.My reasons for doing this was:
1.Ease of installation. The speaker wires clip and unclip easilly.
2.Prefer factory equipment vs. aftermarket.
3.Everything works the same without modifications, reading codes in the HU and all chimes, controls etc is as per factory settings.
The only sacrifice would be that a aftermarket system 'might' sound better?

My advice , having done lots of research, is to order two of these:
GM PART # 22698418
CATEGORY: All
PACK QTY: 1
CORE CHARGE: $0.00
GM LIST: $63.05
OUR PRICE: $32.79
DESCRIPTION: SPEAKER
from gmpartsdirect, take out the back seat, take off the rear shelf, un-plug wires, replace speakers, plug-in wires, done.
Any other option costs more, and is more complex.

sx1980, thats exactly what I was thinking after doing some searching on here about the problems people run into with the monsoon system when changing to aftermarket speakers. i really dont want that headache. i remember around 2003 or so, i drove an 01 or 02 GT with the monsoon system, and it sounded great! so im sure the factory system will be fine for me once i get all of the speakers in working order. the only one with a problem is the drivers rear, but will most likely replace both, just to be safe.
black05gt, i found that same thing on ebay,
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/01-02-03-04-05-Grand-AM-Alero-Monsoon-Rear-Speaker-GM_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ38646QQihZ007QQitemZ 170211375930QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW
its $43 per speaker plus $8.95 to ship, ive never ordered from gmpartsdirect, is their shipping reasonable or would i be better off going with the one on ebay?

bdub 02,
Not sure about gmpartsdirect.I ordered a pair from the dealer. All they wanted was the vin. They charged me $65.00 each.Took 2 days to come in.Took 20 minutes to put in.
I just found it easier for me.

Even though I have never ordered from gmpartsdirect, I have heard good things about them. They have factory parts, so they would take the same amount of time to get in, probably around same shipping, but they are cheaper. I would go with that.

Or get GM wholesale price like me, same price but at the dealership instead of online :)
