Hey guys,

I had my 3400 top end installed a long time ago but my mechanic refused to switch the linkages of the TBs so I still have the 3100 tb on there. I want to try to put it on myself. I have some concerns of course though. I had a very hard time getting the throttle plate out. I ended up scratching it a bit. I dunno if it would make a big difference. I don't think so but I am extremely paranoid. I haven't screwed with my engine personally before and I don't want to mess anything up. Would those scratches do anything?

What exactly happened? It's hard to tell from the pictures. If you just scratched the surface of the plate nothing bad will happen.

It looks like just the surface is scratched, it shouldn't harm anything other than maybe .001hp. If it bugs you then you can always lightly polish it, don't get rid of the cross-hatching.

I wouldn't worry about it.

It seems pretty decent. There's just some digs into the crosstreading and maybe a tiny ding on the side. Thanks.

P.S.: Do you think maybe i should buy another 3100 tb and just take the linkage from that so i don't risk ruining two tb's, or am i just making a big deal out of a simple job?

Making a big deal out of a simple job:) The only part that is crucial is the OD. The face means practically nothing unless you bend it or drill it.

Just make sure that the screws holding the plate to the rod do not fall off. Put some threadlock on them.

Just curious, what exactly is the cross-hatching for on the TB plates?

I've always assumed it was to keep a rigid, flat, and even shape as temperature causes the metal to expand and contract, so that it doesn't warp and either leak or get stuck.

I would assume that it has something to do with the air flow across the plate.

The cross hatch could induce a turbulance in the flow and thus reduce a low pressure area on the down stream side of the plate when in a partially open position. This would throw a variable into the Bernuli effect equasion which would vary the differential pressure (delta P) across the plate. The variance would reduce icing of the throttle body.

Or some engineer though it looked better than a plain disk in a drawing.:roll2:

Makes perfect sense.

I thought it might have something to do with air-dynamics too, but not sure.
