View Full Version : Finally, a system for the new (ish) car

Mods can feel free to move this to non-ga members rides if it breaks the rules being here.
Heres the plan: I got a JL audio 12w6v1 plus two OLD PPI amps (PC275 and PC250). I am building a fiberglass box to fit into the cubby hole in the back for the sub, and the amps are going into the spare tire well. Later on I will add a set of front components and an amp for them. components will likely be Dynaudio 3-ways, and amp will likely by Zapco. The PC275 will power the W6, and the PC250 will power a pair of elemental designs 7" subs that i already put in the car.
I ordered power and speaker wires from knukoncepts, including 1/0 power, a 3-way distribution block, then 8 guage to the two amps i already have. I was also planning for a circuit breaker, but cost was prohibitive, so I got an ANL inline fuse holder. I have a 4 guage spot open for my third amp. I also ordered a JL audio Cleansweep to convert the factory deck outputs into a high end 4 volt signal for the amps.
I had planned to build my own RCAs, but when researching pricing for plugs i found a place to buy Monster Cable XLN PRO cables for the same price.
heres the progress on the sub box. once its done ill get started on amp rack. the wires and cleansweep should arrive next week.

you know, thats a great idea. i might have a body shop paint it to match the car...just to show the fit and finish of it. thanks for the idea.

thanks guys.
ok so another update, i hope im not boring anyone. I attatched the front of the box, er started it at least. since im 'glassing them together i did 1/2 inside the car, the rest will be once i remove if again.
I also started with my amp rack. doesnt look like much more, but itll be all fiberglass. theres a large well below the area that is taped off, so itll give me work to work with.

Damn looks nice, I wouldn't carpet that though I'd get some SEM texture paint and interior trim paint. It would match the OEM trim like it belonged there.

very clean install. You dont even really notice it.
LOL right in that spot in my camaro I have the stock ECM (to run my gauges and what not) the other side I have my Red top Battery.
May I suggest you install some dynamat behind the box.
car audio dave
05-05-2008, 01:19 AM
the car isnt getting any dynamat. lol
im not really focusing on stereo in this car, but i cant go with stock either.

I would put a sheet behind it though. It will sound bad on the out side of the car having the box right by the fender.
car audio dave
05-05-2008, 10:19 AM
ill wait and see how it is. i dont doubt you, and trust me i understand how great dynamat is, but i want to avoid any extra weight.

Just use a small square right behind the box. Dont need a lot.

Are you going with a solid color or are you going to "two-tone" it with carpet to match both parts in the trunk?
car audio dave
05-06-2008, 02:04 AM
just going with gray carpet. not real fancy, its hopefully going to be pretty stealthy.

OK im bringing this back up to update with pics. I was very busy with work so today is the first day ive been able to make any real progress for a while.
How i wired in my cleansweep:

http://i251.photobucket.com/albums/gg291/ls1dave/2001%20Granatelli%20Camaro/audio%20install/DSCN1680.jpg
I had to yank the interior to run my RCAs. my room was full of parts. (dont mind the blue tape, its for another project that i finished but im not showing it in thsi thread)

oh, BTW theres a cover for the amp rack, its the stock side piece that i left off for now until i get the amps all tuned.
with the cover on, you can take off the stock speaker grill and the fused distribution block is exposed.

very good install Dave. Looks like you spent time thinking about everything and then doing it. 2 tumbs up for all your hard work.
where you have you have your amps, I have my red top battery
car audio dave
05-12-2008, 08:03 PM
ah yes, thats a good place for the battery. I would have put mine there if i wasnt going to do a system.
thanks for the compliment. It did take some planning, and i must say that the sound is phenomenal considering im still running monsoon in front. the mid-subs came to life with the amp, and the sub really adds a lot.
