I'd say it's pretty rare to find today. From what I gather, it's a Buick engine that was used as a transverse little-brother of the 3800.

My 86 has the 3.0L and my 97 has the 3100 and they are not the same ;)

Yup!! But there was no 3.0L in 88 and 89.

You are 100% right! It's a buick engine and it was also used in the Somerset, Calais and Skylark from the same era. I'm having a very hard time finding a shift cable (see the wanted section) so i guess it's kind of rare.

Sry I was just going based on the years listed in the forum section. As for the shift cable have you tried www.car-part.com

Yeah, its not a common engine. Alot of the GA's in that era had either Quad 4's or Iron Dukes. Its probably about as rare as the Turbocharged GA engine.

can't really find any info on % of cars with the 3.0 but the quad and the 3.0 was never offered at the same time. It was just the 2.5 and the 3.0 my guess is it was probably around the same percentage as 2.3 to 3.1 or 2.4 to 3.4L we have today but the cars are getting so old that most have been crushed by this point.

Sorry, but I wouldn't say it is rare at all. Next to the Iron Duke, I would say they are the second most common engine in the early 3rd gens. Perhaps now they seem rare, simply because there aren't many in running status anymore. Based on junkyards and what I've seen on the streets, my list going from most common to most rare in 85-88:
1. Iron Duke
2. 3.0 V6
3. Quad 4
4. Turbo 2.0
If you bring transmission into consideration, manual Quad 4's might be the most rare.
I've seen them elsewhere too... I remember a Sunbird convertible at a Carlisle show had the 3.0 V6 in it.
My ex's 87 SE had the 3.0 V6 in it.
Yea they did tom 85-89 its the predecessor to the 3300
85-88
No V6 was offered 89-91.

I test drove a Buick Somerset (with the 3.0L engine) back in 1997. I don't remember the model year of the car ('86 maybe).
I remember one guy on the net with a 3.0L GA several years back. Ian McLeod....he was from Canada. But I've lost track of him, and I believe the car was totaled.

^There's an old-school name. Was that the GA that was in black primer with aftermarket wheels? Or am I think yet another old schooler?

85-87.
In 88 there was no 3.0 for the Grand Am. The turbo and 2.3 replace the 3.0L

^Actually I might be thinking of someone else... Geedsman or something like that. I remember he dented a wheel once too. I'll have to look at my old GA pics... think I have pics of his car somewhere with a random topless chick.

Yup... that's the one. Not updated cause he wrecked it sometime in 01 or 02, and kinda disappeared after that, much like many old schoolers did after the GApower/GMpower/GMpowertalk apocalypse or dec 2002.
Edit: found his engine pic...

Still has that convertible, eh? I'll have to head over there and see what it looks like.
BTW, I'd say this is the most action the 3.0L forum has had in quite some time. Possibly ever. :)
