I'm going to be building a new box for a set of 10" subwoofers. How big should the box be for maximum performance? I'm running a 600 watt amp.

Would say depends on the subs and what it says the require space wise and what kind of box you want. From my expierence the ported boxs usually take the most space but also sound best to me.

2 pioneer 350 watt 10" subs. Just building a rectangle shaped ported box, just need to know how big to build it. It's going in the trunk of my Grand Am so space isn't really an issue.

Need specs of subs... manufacturer will specify recommended box size/type(s)

If you're getting the subs new, they should come with a sheet that lists optimum internal volume ranges for each box type for that particular sub. Othewise, if you have the model nuber you can usually find that information on their website or elsewhere online.

Check their website for the model of subs you have it should tell you recommended volume for a sealed and ported enclosure...but a ported box is going to take up most of your trunk I can tell you that right now

Thanks for the responces. The subs are currently in a truck box and are not new. I'll take them out this weekend and check the model number and look on pioneers website.
What is the best way to do it and what sounds louder or better - ported or sealed?

ported will be louder but sealed will give more tight punchy bass

Not to the untrained ear if tuned properly. The problem is most people don't match specs, they throw the subs in the ported box they bought at Best Buy, it's not set up for that particular sub so yeah, it'll be a little sloppy.
And some subs just aren't made for ported, same goes with some not being made to be good with sealed. It's all in the sub info. Chaun had a method for figuring out whether or not it should be ported or sealed. My subs were in the middle but slightly more towards ported, so that's my early summer project.

What is this method?

All help is appreciated, thanks.
My subs are Pioneer 10" TS-W25F, 4 ohm, 350 watt max. Where do I look to find what size box to build?
I also have Legacy 10" LWFX107, 4 ohm, 600 watt max. Where do I look to find box size for these?

I did a search on both of those and I cant find any T/S parameters for either sub...

What is this method?
Take a subs FS frequency divde it by the Subs Qes Value and it will come up with a number in decemal form. This number will tell you what type of enclosure your sub would preform best in..
Less then 50..then sealed would suit the subwoofer best
Between 50-80 then either sealed or ported..if your sub falls in this range it is pretty much up to you.
Greater then 80 then ported only...If you seal this sub then you are basically wasting it..
Any questions just let me know
For example..My Brahma in my GA
Parameters
Fs 26 Hz
Qms 5.5
Qes 0.51
Qts 0.47
Vas 113 liters
Znom 1 Ohm parallel
Re2 0.75 Ohms parallel
Le3 0.45 mH parallel
BL 15.9
Sd 749 cm2
Xmax 28mm one way linear
Pmax4 1600W RMS, 4800W peak
SPL5 87.6 dB @ 1W, 1m
Diameter 15.5"
Cutout 14"
Depth 8.25"
Volume 0.18 cubic feet
Weight 41 pounds
The number is 50.9...or rounded to 51 so either ported or sealed would be great for this sub..Im an output freak so I ported it it... 3.5cuft tuned to 30hz.

Wheras mine came to like 78 or something, it can be either but it's almost on ported, oddly because I had heard that most SQ subs are sealed only.

OK a friend helped me out to find the best size. I'm making a L shaped port design box that is 1.9 cu ft and tuned to 32 hz.

Doesn't crutchfield.com have a calculator or something for this?

Here it is, amazing how much better it sounds now with a proper size box.

is it a common chamber or is the subs in separate chambers?
Blackhawk

I'm guessing common since he has one port.

It's a common chamber. This is the first box I've built. I have carpet for it too but I was too anxious to hear what it sounds like.

I don't have carpet either. Picked up some Lambo Gray to do it, I was going to do vinyl but I'll save that for my setup this summer. Looks good btw Fireball. What part of MN are you in? Some of us are trying to set up meets so if you have any ideas you can fidn the thread in the Regional Meet section.

Two Harbors MN. I'll save the carpet for when I make a box to fit under the back seat of my truck.

Hey fireball can you post the specs for that box you built such as the internal volume with the port as well as the port length and size. My buddy just came across a pair of these subs and I can't find anything in the line of specs to build him a box. Does it hit pretty good in this box?
